November 11, 2008.

Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 91 number 07-18 dated April 13, 2007 for reasons listed below.

Affected Vehicles

91 CD skips periodically or CD changer causes MMI system malfunction

Condition

Customer is complaining about interruption every 2-3 seconds when playing a CD.

In more severe cases, the MMI system may malfunction: Sound may dropout, all CD changer LEDs may blink, IP cluster center display information may flicker, etc. Sporadically there may be no tester communication with MMI components.

Tip:

Only the MP3-capable CD changer (4E0 035 110 A, 4L0 035 110) with SW Version 0270 is affected.

Technical Background

The component protection of the CD changer is enabled. Root cause may be the calculation of a faulty checksum in the CDC during initialization, or the CD changer was replaced and the component protection not disabled.

In more severe cases, the internal flash memory might be corrupted.

Production Solution

Software improvement introduced - SW 0350.

Service

If the CD is just skipping, verify that DTC 02095/000 (component protection active) and/or DTC 02084/005 (component protection - no basic settings/adaptation) are stored in the CD changer (Address word 0E - Media player position 1) and that the CD changer Software version is 0270. If this is the case, a software update of the CD changer has to be performed.

In the more severe cases, loop the optical bus of the CD changer and verify the return of normal MMI operation. If confirmed, re-connect the CD changer in the optical loop and try to run an software update of the CD changer. If the update can't be performed, replace the CD changer.

Software update procedure

1. Eject inserted CDs, if applicable, and load the Update CD in the first slot of the CD changer.

2. Press and hold the MMI Control Head buttons Setup and Return simultaneously until the following screen appears:

3. Press the lower right soft key of the MMI Control Head to enter the SWUpdate menu.

4. Use the central control knob of the MMI Control Head to select CD-ROM and then Standard.

5. Scroll down the component list with the central control knob and select Start download.

6. After selecting OK to indicate that you really want to run the update, you will see the following screen. The update of the CD changer lasts approximately 20 minutes.

Tip:

During this update time, don't operate anything in the vehicle, even the door handles.

7. After the update the CD changer initializes and the following screen shows the successful update of the component, select Restart MMI.

8. Eject the Update CD and re-insert removed CDs, if applicable.

9. Connect the VAS Tester to the vehicle and erase sporadic fault codes in all control units.

10. Perform the required SVM Update using action code:

- MP3H350 for MMI high equipped vehicles.

- MP3B350 for MMI basic equipped vehicles (monochrome MMI display).
