Vehicle Information

MIL on, engine speed sensor spacer not required (DTC P0300, P0335, P0336, P0321, P0322)

Condition

^ Multiple misfires detected on one or more cylinders.

^ Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) may be on or flashing.

^ May be accompanied by one or more of the following DTCs:

^ DTC P0300...P0306 (Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected).

^ DTC P0335 (Crankshaft Position Sensor A (G28) - Circuit Malfunction).

^ DTC P0336 (Crankshaft Position Sensor A (G28) - Circuit Range/Performance).

^ DTC P0321 (Ignition/Distributor Eng.Speed Inp.Circ. - Range/Performance).

^ DTC P0322 (Ignition/Distributor Eng.Speed Inp.Circ - No Signal).

Technical Background

Condition may be caused by a spacer (Figure 1, 3) installed between the engine speed (RPM) sensor (G28) (Figure 1, 1) and the gearbox (Figure 1, 2).

Production Solution

Service





Remove spacer (Figure 1, 3) as follows:

1. Locate engine speed (RPM) sensor (G28) (Figure 1, 1). See Repair Manual Group 24 >> Component locations, overview.

2. Remove spacer (Figure 1, 3) from between engine speed (RPM) sensor (G28) (Figure 1, 1) and the gearbox (Figure 1, 2). Discard the spacer.

3. Reinstall engine speed (RPM) sensor (G28) (Figure 1, 1) to gearbox using bolt (Figure 1, arrow). (Torque = 10 Nm.)

4. With VAS 5051 or VAS 5052 Diagnostic tool connected: Check ECM for DTCs and for misfire detection in Measuring Value Blocks (MVB) 015 and 016.

5. Erase DTC(s) as necessary.
