RVU - Repairing telephone preparation (CQ / 91D8)
Condition
This RVU has been proactively released to prevent the following condition from occurring in the vehicle:
The hands-free phone function is inoperative.
This Required Vehicle Update (RVU) is in effect for 15 months from date of publication. After that date, this RVU will expire and no longer be in effect.
Vehicle must meet all of the following criteria:
- Procedure is valid only for vehicles that show the CQ / 91D8 code in the ElsaWeb Campaign/Action Information screen on the day of repair.
- Vehicle must be within the Limited New Vehicle Warranty.
- Procedure must be performed within the allotted time frame stated in this Technical Service Bulletin.
- Procedure must be performed on applicable vehicles in Dealer inventory prior to sale.
Technical Background
On Audi vehicles manufactured within a limited period and equipped with particular phone preparation control unit, the flash memory of the telephone control unit can become damaged.

Tip:
For successful results, it is important to perform all the sections listed below in the sequence described.
1. Verifying hardware and software version of phone preparation control unit.
2. Update firmware of the phone preparation control unit, using repair CD 4L0 906 961 Q.
3. Update software of the phone preparation control unit, using repair CD 4L0 906 961 Q.
4. Perform interim software update of the remaining MMI components using Update CD 4F0 906 961 AB.
5. Perform final software update of the remaining MMI components using Update CD 4L0 906 961H.
6. Perform Software Version Management (SVM) feedback documentation.
Section 1. Verifying hardware and software version of phone preparation control unit
1. Press and hold the SETUP button, and then press and hold the RETURN button. Hold both buttons down until the red update screen appears.
2. Select Handyvorb2 to verify Hardware and Software version of the phone preparation.
- If HW-Index: H00 is displayed, replace the phone preparation control unit.
(See Workshop Manual, Electrical system >> Rep. Gr. 91 >> Infotainment, telephone system >> Removing and installing telephone transmitter and receiver unit -R36.)
Tip:
Continue with the software updates after the replacement.
- If HW-Index: H16 and SW-Index: 0700 is displayed in the vehicle, continue with the software updates of the MMI control units.
- If a different combination of HW- and SW-Index is displayed, no further work is required.
Section 2. Update firmware of the phone preparation control unit using repair CD 4L0 906 961 Q
Tips:
- Connect a battery charger to the vehicle. (This is necessary because of the long period of time with ignition on during all updates and the final SVM feedback documentation.) Remember to use the Battery Energy Manager posts, and don't charge directly at the battery studs.
- Switch off all unnecessary electrical equipment (HVAC, seat heater, interior/exterior light, etc.).
- Ensure that electromagnetic interference sources (mobile phone or cordless DECT telephone) are not operated in or near the vehicle while individual control units are being updated.
1. Insert repair CD 4L0 906 961 Q in the single CD drive or in the first slot of the vehicle's CD changer.
2. Access the red update screen and select the function SW Update with the lower right soft button.
3. Select CD-ROM with the rotary pushbutton and press to confirm.
Tip:
If the error message Metainfo.txt not found is displayed, you have inserted the wrong repair CD.
4. Select Standard with the rotary pushbutton and press to confirm.
5. Scroll down to the end of the module list with the rotary pushbutton. Select OK to begin the update.
6. The firmware of the phone preparation will be updated now. This may take up to 6 minutes.
Subsequently the internal repair process is performed. This may take up to 5 minutes.
The repair process is complete and the system reinitialize.
To reset the system, scroll down the menu and select Restart MMI.
- If the repair process has been completed successfully, Handyvorb2 will show OK>. Proceed to Section 3, Update software of the phone preparation unit.
- If the repair process has not been completed successfully, Handyvorb2 will show NOT OK >.
Proceed to Step 7.
7. Select Try again? and press to confirm.
8. If the second repair attempt is not completed successfully either, replace the telephone control unit. (See Workshop Manual >> Electrical system >> Rep. Gr. 91 >> Infotainment, telephone system >> Removing and installing telephone transmitter and receiver unit - R36).
Tip:
Repeat this section (firmware update) after the replacement. The spare part may not have the latest firmware. Then proceed with Section 3.
Section 3. Update Software of the phone preparation control unit, using repair CD 4L0 906 961 Q
1. With the repair CD still in slot 1 of the CD changer, press and hold the SETUP button, and then press and hold the RETURN button. Hold both buttons down until the red update screen reappears. (See Figure 1.)
2. Select SWUpdate >> CD-ROM >> Standard. Scroll to the end of the displayed list with the rotary push button.
3. If Handyvorb2 shows E >, select Start download.
If the E next to Handyvorb2 or the entire menu item is missing, reset the MMI system.
To do so, press buttons 1, 2 and 3.
4. Read and obey the warning.
5. Scroll down to confirm the download.
Tip: The process may take up to one hour.
6. Complete the update procedure by scrolling down and selecting Restart MMI.
Section 4. Perform interim software update of the remaining MMI components using Update CD 4F0 906 961 AB
1. If the vehicle is MY 2005, it may still have a Version 4 Navigation DVD installed. Replace Version 4 Navigation DVDs with a Version 5 Navigation DVD prior to the MMI component Update.
The DVD can be obtained through the Navteq hotline.
2. Press and hold the SETUP button, and then press and hold the RETURN button. Hold both buttons down until the red update screen reappears. (See Figure 1.)
3. Select "Interfacebox (0x0100)" to identify the installed software version (SW-Index).
Tip:
- If the 07 - Headunit software is of 2740 and below, this interim software update is required. Proceed to Step 4.
- If the 07 - Headunit software is of 3360 and higher, this interim software update can be skipped. Proceed directly to Section 5.
4. Return to the Current config. screen and insert Update CD 4F0 906 961 AB in the single CD drive or in the first slot of the vehicle's CD changer (position 1).
Start the software update. Follow the procedure described in Section 3.
5. Repeat the software update procedure as long as the screen in Figure 26 appears.
This is a simple way to ensure that all components are updated.
Section 5. Perform final software update of the remaining MMI components using Update CD 4L0 906 961 H
1. Insert Update CD 4L0 906 961 H in the single CD drive or in the first slot of the vehicle's CD changer (position 1) and perform the software update as described in Section 3.
2. Repeat the software update procedure as long as the screen in Figure 26 appears.
This is a simple way to ensure that all components are updated.
Section 6. Perform Software Version Management (SVM) feedback documentation
1. Connect vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051- or -VAS 5051B- or -VAS 5052- (with online capability) to the vehicle.
2. Connect -VAS 5051- or -VAS 5052- to your workshop network (CPN).
3. Perform a Problem-related hardware and software update. Use the SVM code 91D8A002.
Tip:
Use the SVM code 91D8A002 and not the SVM code which may be printed on the software update CD.
- After GFF scans all modules, if it states you need to update another module, select No.
- It is normal for GFF to state The SVM action code leads to no result, please contact Technical Assistance. It is not necessary to contact Technical Assistance; the procedure is complete.

Some of the affected vehicles may be involved in additional Required Vehicle Update Technical Service Bulletins. Please check your ElsaWeb Campaign/Action Information screen so that any additional required work can be done simultaneously.

Required Customer Notification
Inform your customer in writing by recording on the repair order any and all work that was conducted on the vehicle, including any and all updates completed under this required vehicle update technical service bulletin.
Required Parts and Tools
- Destroy and properly dispose of removed parts in accordance with local, state and federal/provincial environmental regulations.
- If you have exhausted your allocated parts and you require additional parts for vehicles affected by this RVU but have exceeded your Upper Order Limit, please submit your requests for additional parts. Be sure to include the affected VINs with your order. Prior to submitting your request, ensure that each vehicle has the CQ/91D8 code open in ElsaWeb. Your order will be reviewed and processed accordingly.
