91 Audi Music Interface (AMI): iPod-related complaints

Condition

The customer may report the following when an iPod is connected to the Audi Music Interface (AMI):

- In Mix (shuffle) mode: Very long response times occur with subsequent malfunctions when selecting the next track. Long response times may also occur when pressing the Return hard key in this mode.

- In Mix (shuffle) mode: The previous track is not played when Previous is selected in the CD control menu. Instead, another track will be played.

- In Mix (shuffle) mode: If the first track in the play list was selected via the Previous button in the CD control menu (and not the rotary push button), the track lists in the MMI and Driver Information System do not match (synchronization issue).

- In Mix (shuffle) mode: The currently played track is not highlighted in white letters on the MMI display.

- If a currently playing track is selected again via the rotary push button control, the audio drops out briefly.

- The currently playing track is not color-highlighted in the MMI menu.

- An audio book track continuously fast forwards if fast forward was selected in the first seconds of the track.

- Device is being initialized. Please wait& is displayed when a Generation2 - iPod Nano is installed.

- iPod locks up and operable again after resetting the iPod.

- iPod performs a reset and restarts itself.

Technical Background

Automatic iPod upgrade contained inoperative driver software. Since the majority of iPods are updated automatically via iTunes and a downgrade is usually not possible, the AMI driver has to be updated. Since the iPod is updated automatically, the customer may complain that nothing has changed but the AMI suddenly does not function properly.

Tip:

The driver update of AMI is not a Zug update. Unlike the Zug update, which is performed with an Update CD in the CD changer, the driver software update is performed with update software on a USB device, connected directly to AMI.

Production Solution

New AMI driver is installed in MY2008 modules.

Service

The following devices are necessary to perform the driver software update and verify the operation:

- Common USB stick, without any data already stored.

- USB adapter cable, to connect the USB stick to AMI.

- The customer's iPod and his iPod adapter cable for verification.

Procedure:

1. Press and hold the Setup and subsequently the Return button. Hold down both buttons until the red screen appears.

2. Scroll down the Current (MMI) Config. list until AMI is highlighted.

3. Select AMI with the main control knob and verify the software version (SW-Index) of the Audi Music Interface. The software version will be 0170 or 0700.

4. Go online and access Audi ServiceNet to download the correct driver update file (either version 0170 or 0700, corresponding to what was verified in the previous step). The update files can be found by selecting Special Tools in the navigation bar on the lefthand side of the page.
5. Unzip and store the bin file in the root directory on a common, empty USB stick.

6. Verify sufficient charge of the vehicle battery (Voltage > 12.2 V) and maintain the charge, if necessary.

7. Switch on the MMI system and select AMI as the active Audio source. To do this, select CD/Aux >> Source >> Audi music interface.

8. Remove the iPod adapter cable, if applicable, and connect the USB adapter cable to AMI. When connected, insert the USB stick with the stored bin file.

9. The USB stick will automatically initialize, and the driver software update will begin.

NOTE:
Do not remove the USB stick during the update, which lasts approximately 2 minutes.

10. The driver software update is completed when the message displayed in Figure 6 appears.

11. Remove the USB stick and the USB adapter cable.

12. Reinstall the iPod adapter cable and the iPod. Verify proper operation.

Warranty

When procedure applies to vehicles under warranty, use the table.

Required Parts and Tools

The Audi Music Interface driver update is necessary because the iPod was updated with inoperative driver software. Therefore, the Audi Music Interface is not the root cause of the malfunction.

Replaced parts due to one of the conditions will be re-debited.
