Tie Rod Ball Joint
Tie Rod Ball Joint
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque wrench (40-200 Nm) (VAG 1332)
• Open ring spanner insert, AF 24 mm (VAG 1332/9)
Removing
- Place the vehicle on the hoist. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on the Hoist and on its Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on the Hoist and on its Wheels.
- Remove the wheel.
- Remove bolt - 1 -.
- Remove the nut - 5 - and remove the bolt - 2 -.
• Do not widen the slit in the wheel bearing housing using a chisel or similar tool.
• Do not use a chisel or similar tool between the wheel bearing housing - 1 - and the tie rod ball joint sealing washer - 2 - when removing the tie rod or the sealing washer could be damaged.
• The tie rod may only be pressed out of the wheel bearing housing over the tie rod ball joint stud end or driven off with a block of wood and a hammer.
• Press the tie rod downward.
• Loosen the hex nut - 3 - and remove the tie rod ball joint. The hex head - 4 - on the tie rod aids in counter holding.
• Make sure that tie rod ball joint and clamp hole on the wheel bearing housing are free of grease.
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Observe the following when doing so:
- Instal the tie rod ball joint onto the tie rod to the stop.
- Align the tie rod so that tie rod ball joint pins are in the installed position.
- Insert tie rod in the wheel bearing housing to the stop.
• Install the tie rod to the wheel bearing housing - 1 - by hand. Do not put stress on the tie rod end sealing washer - 2 -.
- Tighten the lock nut - 3 -. Refer to - item 2 - in => [ Power Steering Gear ] Power Steering Gear. Use the (VAG 1332/9). When tightening, counter hold at the tie rod hex head - 4 -.
- Insert the bolt - 2 - and tighten the nut - 5 -. Refer to - item 9 - in => [ Power Steering Gear Assembly Overview ] Power Steering Gear Assembly Overview.
- Install the bolt - 1 - and tighten. Refer to - item 7 - in => [ Power Steering Gear Assembly Overview ] Power Steering Gear Assembly Overview.
- Install the wheel and tighten.
- Place the vehicle on its wheels. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on the Hoist and on its Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on the Hoist and on its Wheels.
- Perform a vehicle alignment. Refer to => [ Wheel Alignment ] Wheel Alignment.
