Transmission, Removing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine support bridge (10 - 222 A)
• Adapter (10 - 222 A /21)
• Bracket (30 - 211 A)
• Pry Lever - RMV Outside Mirror (80-200)
• Transmission support (3282)
• Adjustment plate (3282/48)
• Pin (3282/50)
• Engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A)
• Step ladder (VAS 5085)

• M10x20 bolt
Procedure
- Observe all repair notes => [ General Repair Information ] General Repair Information.
CAUTION!
Contact Corrosion Notes => [ Contact Corrosion ] Contact Corrosion.
• All cable ties that are opened or cut open during removal must be replaced in the same positions during installation.
CAUTION!
Observe procedures for disconnecting battery.
- Switch ignition off.
- Remove cover - arrows - of the luggage compartment right side trim.
- Remove cover - 1 - from above battery.
• Disregard - 2 -.
- Disconnect Ground (GND) cable - arrow - at the battery.
- Remove rear engine cover - arrows -.
- Remove rubber seal - 1 - of the plenum chamber covers.
- Remove plenum chamber covers - 2 - and - 3 -.
- Remove strut tower rear bolts - 3 -.
- Secure Adapter (10 - 222 A /21) without Adapter (10 - 222 A /4) to suspension strut towers.
• The supports are designated for the left and right side of the vehicle.
• The center mounting point - 2 - of the supports is on the strut tower front bolts.
• The Adapters (10 - 222 A /21) are fastened with the strut tower rear bolts - 3 -.
• The knurled head screw - 1 - must be turned down so far that the support plate rests on top of the strut tower.
- Install Adapter (10 - 222 A /4) with adapters (T40093/6) on adapters (10 - 222 A /21).
- Secure spindles (10 - 222 A /11) on engine lifting eyes.
- Pre-tension engine slightly using spindles on engine support bridge.
- Remove both front wheels.
- Remove noise insulation by loosening fasteners - 1, 2, 4 -.
• Disregard - 3 -.
- Remove front part of left and right from wheel housing liner.
- Free up secondary air injection (AIR) air guide hose - 1 - on ATF cooler bracket.
- Remove bolts - arrows - and remove ATF cooler.
- Secure ATF cooler with attached coolant hoses to engine.
- Remove noise insulation bracket by removing bolts - 1 -.
- Remove crossmember by removing bolts - 2 -.
- Remove left drive axle heat shield - arrows -.
• For the sake of illustration, shown with engine removed.
- Remove heat shield for right drive axle - arrows -.
- Remove left and right drive axles from transmission flange shafts.
- Remove left and right stabilizer bar mounting bolts - 1 and 2 -.
- Remove bolts - 3 and 4 -.
• Ignore items - 1 and 2 -.
- Remove left and right engine mounting bolts - arrows -.
- Remove engine carrier.
- Disconnect electrical connector - 2 - on right engine mount.
- Remove electrical wiring bracket from right engine support - 1 -.
- Remove bolts - arrows - and remove right engine support with engine mount.
• The B+ line can only be removed after disconnecting electrical connector terminal 50.
- Remove Ground (GND) cable - 1 -.
- Remove electrical wires - 3 - and - 4 -.
- Remove bolts - 2 - and - 5 - and remove starter.
- Insert guide pin on adapter (T40058) so smaller diameter - arrow 2 - faces toward engine. The larger diameter - arrow 1 - faces toward adapter.
- To loosen the torque converter bolts, counterhold the crankshaft with adapter (T40058).
• Pay no attention to - arrow -.
- Remove 3 internal TORX bolts - arrows - of the torque converter in the opening of the removed starter (turn crankshaft 1/3 revolution further for each bolt).
- Remove front crossmember - arrows -.
- Remove left front muffler nuts - 1 -.
- Remove bolt - 3 -.
• Disregard - 2 -.
- Remove right front muffler nuts - 1 -.
- Remove bolt - 2 - and remove with spring element.
CAUTION!
There is a risk of damaging flex joint in front exhaust pipe.
• Do not bend flex joint in front exhaust pipe more than 10°.
- Remove nuts - arrows - on front muffler retaining tabs.
- Disconnect exhaust system at clamping sleeves - 1 and 2 - and remove front muffler.
- If present, remove driveshaft heat shield - A - - arrows -.
- Remove bolts connecting driveshaft to transmission.
- Press driveshaft together with rear final drive; the universal joint is able to slide axially.
- Tie up driveshaft to body.
- Remove left and right front transmission mount bolts - arrows -.
- Remove bolts - arrows - and remove left transmission support with transmission mounting.
• Disregard - 1 -.
- Remove bolts - arrows - and remove right transmission support with transmission mounting.
- Press ball socket - 1 - of the selector lever cable off from the selector shaft lever using the Pry Lever - RMV Outside Mirror (80-200).
- Unclip securing plate - 2 - at selector lever cable mounting bracket.
- Remove bolt - 3 - and lay aside selector lever cable.
- Remove nut - arrow - and remove ATF lines from bracket.
- Remove bolt - arrow - on ATF line bracket.
- Remove bolt - arrow - and ATF lines from transmission.
- Loosen bolt - 1 - on lower left coolant pipe bracket.
• Disregard items - 2 to 4 -.
CAUTION!
There is a risk of destroying the transmission control module (Mechatronic) with static discharge.
• Do not touch contacts in transmission connector with hands.
- To discharge static electricity, touch transmission housing with hand (without wearing gloves).
- Disconnect electrical connector on transmission by turning screw connection counter-clockwise - arrow -.
- Mount transmission support (3282) on the Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A).
- Place adjustment plate (3282/48) on the transmission support (3282), as shown in the illustration.
- Align the arms of the transmission support to correspond with the holes in the adjustment plate.
- Attach support elements on adjustment plate, as illustrated.
• The pin (3282/50) has one flattened side - arrow -. When inserting into transmission, the flattened side must face toward the oil pan.
• The arrow symbol on the adjusting plate (3282/52) points in the direction of travel.
- Place Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) with transmission support (3282) under transmission.
- Align adjusting plate (3282/48) so that it is parallel to the transmission by adjusting the transmission support (3282).
- Secure mount to threaded hole at left back of transmission with an M10x20 bolt - arrow 1 -.
- Insert flattened Pin (3282/50) into mounting hole at right rear of transmission housing - arrow 2 -.
CAUTION!
• The flattened side of the pin must face toward transmission oil pan, so that it does not bend or become damaged.
• If the transmission oil pan is damaged, it must be replaced.
- Insert pin - arrow 2 - in left front mounting hole on transmission housing.
- Place pin in housing recess at right front of differential housing - arrow 1 -.
- Raise transmission slightly using Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A).
- Remove tunnel crossmember bolts - arrows -.
- Evenly lower engine/transmission assembly with spindles on Engine Support Bridge (10 - 222 A) and with Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) until dimension - a - is reached.
• Dimension - a - = 70 mm.
- Remove bolts - 3 through 10 - connecting engine to transmission.
• Ignore - A -.
- Pull left lower coolant pipe slightly to left.
- Press transmission off alignment sleeves and off engine and press torque converter simultaneously through opening of removed starter and off drive plate.
- Disconnect electrical connector - arrow - on Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor (G28).
- Lower transmission at the rear edge by adjusting the transmission support (3282) accordingly.
- Pay attention to driveshaft flange clearance when lowering transmission.
- Secure torque converter in transmission against falling down using Bracket (30 - 211 A).
