Ignition System: Service and Repair



Ignition System Components, Removing And Installing

NOTE:
- Cylinder bank 1 with cylinders 1 through 6 is located at right in direction of travel.
- Cylinder bank 2 with cylinders 7 through 12 is located at left in direction of travel.
- Control housing with camshaft adjustment valves







1 - Connector
- Black, 4-pin
- Before disconnecting, mark allocation of connector to component
2 - Hood
- For Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor
3 - Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor*
- Before disconnecting, mark allocation of connector to component
- Sensor contacts and connector contacts gold plated
Cylinder bank 1
- Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor 1 G40 on intake camshaft
- Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor 3 G300 on exhaust camshaft
Cylinder bank 2
- Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor 2 G163 on intake camshaft
- Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor 4 G301 on exhaust camshaft
4 - 10 Nm
5 - 20 Nm
- Torque setting influences the function of knock sensor
6 - Knock sensors*
- contact surfaces between knock sensor and cylinder block must be free of corrosion, dirt and grease

Cylinder bank 1
- Component location: Knock Sensors 1 and 2

Cylinder bank 2
- Component location: Knock Sensors 3 and 4

7 - 3-pin connector
- Contacts gold plated
- Light gray for Knock Sensor (KS) 1 G61
- Gray for Knock Sensor (KS) 2 G66
- Orange for Knock Sensor 3 G198
- Black for Knock Sensor 4 G199
8 - Spark plug, 30 Nm
- Type and spark plug gap.
9 - Ignition coils with power output stages*

Cylinder bank 1
- Ignition Coil with Power Output Stage 1 to 6 (N70, N127, N21, N292, N323 and N324)

Cylinder bank 2
- Ignition Coil with Power Output Stage 7 to 12 (N325 to N330)







Control housing with camshaft adjustment valves

- Removing and installing control housing:
- Check camshaft adjustment valves.

Cylinder bank 1

1 - Valve -1 - for Camshaft Adjustment Valve 1 N205
2 - E Camshaft Adjustment Valve 1 (exhaust) N318 -1 -
3 - Glide track: clipped in at control housing
4 - Control housing
5 - 8 Nm

Cylinder bank 2

1 - Camshaft Adjustment Valve 2 (exhaust) N319 - 2 -
2 - Camshaft Adjustment Valve 2 N208 - 2 -
3 - Glide track: clipped in at control housing
4 - Control housing
5 - 8 Nm







Component location: Knock sensors 1 and 2 for cylinder bank 1
1 - Knock Sensor (KS) 1 G61
- Color identification: light gray
f - For exhaust bank 1 of cylinders 1, 2 and 3
2 - Knock Sensor (KS) 2 G66
- Color identification: gray
f - For exhaust bank 2 of cylinders 4, 5 and 6







Component location: Knock sensors 3 and 4 for cylinder bank 2
1 - Knock Sensor 3 G198
- Color identification: orange
f - For exhaust bank 3 of cylinders 7, 8 and 9
2 - Knock sensor 4 G199
- Color identification: black
f - For exhaust bank 4 of cylinders 10, 11 and 12
