Front Level Control System Sensor

Level Control System

Front Level Control System Sensor

General Information

Vehicles with level control and/or gas discharge lamps have standard automatic head lamp range control.

To function properly, the level control and automatic head lamp range control system need information about compression travel or rebound travel in the front and rear suspensions.

The position of the lower left control arm relative to the body is transferred to the left front vehicle level control system sensor (G78) via a coupling rod. This transmits electrical signals to the high intensity gas discharge lamp control module (J343/344).

At the rear suspension, these signals from left rear level control system sensor (G76) and right rear level control system sensor (G77) are transmitted to the left/right high intensity gas discharge lamp control module.

These signals are required for determining vehicle level.

The automatic headlight range control reacts independently to changes in vehicle level.

The vehicle level can change in the following situations:

Trailer mode

Different load conditions; vehicle empty, vehicle partially or fully loaded

CAUTION!
Head lamp and level control setting!

The control position must be adapted and the head lamp basic setting much be checked if:

The trailing arm has been removed and reinstalled or replaced,

Installation work has been performed on the level control system sensor,

The level control system sensor has been replaced,

The threaded connection for the level control system sensor coupling rod was loosened at the trailing arm.

Readapt the control position. Refer to => [ Control Position, Programming ] Level Control System.

- If the control position was reprogrammed on vehicles with lane assist, the directional stabilization assistance control module (J759) must be calibrated. Refer to => [ Lane Assist Calibration ] Lane Assist Calibration.

Removing

Note that there are different versions with a "long" or "short" lever.

Only use the same version of the sensor. Do not install both versions together.

- Disconnect the electrical connector - 1 -.

- Remove the coupling rod nut (not pictured). Counter hold at the stud - 4 - when doing this.

- Remove the bolts - 2 -.

- Remove the level control system sensor - 3 -.

Installing

Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Observe the following when doing so:

The sensor lever must point forward.

- Tighten the bolts - 2 - to 5 Nm.

- Tighten the new coupling rod nut (not pictured) to 8 Nm. Counter hold at the stud - 4 - when doing this.

- Readapt the control position. Refer to => [ Control Position, Programming ] Level Control System.

- If the control position was reprogrammed on vehicles with lane assist, the directional stabilization assistance control module must be calibrated. Refer to => [ Lane Assist Calibration ] Lane Assist Calibration.

- Perform the headlamp basic setting.
