Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 28 number 09-08 dated June 17, 2009 for reasons listed below.

Affected Vehicles

Condition

Customer may report that the range for the remote transmitter key operation is insufficient. No DTCs are stored for this condition.

Technical Background

Cause may be one of the following:

^ Inoperative remote key.

^ Low remote key battery.

^ An electrostatic charge, induced into the antenna lead of the ignition starter switch during vehicle production.

^ A broken solder joint at left rear glass.

Production Solution

Improved production process.

Service

1. After verifying the condition, obtain an operative remote key from another A6 or Q7 (same remote key) to compare the reception strength with the customer's remote key.

Tip: The key from another vehicle needn't be adapted to the vehicle for this test.

2. Select Vehicle Self Diagnosis >> 05 - Access/Start Authorization System >> 011 - Measured values.

3. Note reading of Measurement Value Block 11, field 3, while operating each remote next to the left rear side window (Q7) or the top right of rear window (A6).

4. Walk 10 feet away.

5. Check the readings again. In both instances, the readings should be 150 or higher.

^ If the customer key's reading is below 150 and the operative remote key's reading is OK, check the voltage of the customer's remote key battery.

^ If the voltage is below 3.0V:

a. Replace the battery.

b. Run the reception strength test again.

^ If the voltage is above 3.0V, replace the remote key.

^ If the reception strength of both keys is insufficient, check whether aftermarket devices are installed or the affected window is tinted.

If not applicable, proceed depending on model and VIN range.

If Q7 and VIN below 4L*7D054502:

Inspect the wiring and connections of the R47 antenna module at the left rear side window (Figure 1).

^ If a solder point has fallen off, replace the affected window.

^ If the wiring and connections are OK:

a. Inspect the connection of Access/Start Authorization Switch E41 5 for correct installation.

b. Plug the connector back in.

c. Perform the reception strength test again.

If still not OK, replace E415.

If Q7 and VIN above 4L*7D054502 or A6:

1. Inspect the connection of Access/Start Authorization Switch E415 for correct installation.

2. Plug the connector back in.

3. Perform the reception strength test again. If still not OK, replace E415.
