Vehicle Information

Condition

This RVU has been proactively released to prevent the following condition from occurring in the vehicle:

The rear axle differential may exhibit a high degree of wear after a short period of service.

This Required Vehicle Update (RVU) is in effect for 15 months from date of publication. After that date, this RVU will expire and no longer be in effect.

Vehicle must meet all of the following criteria:

^ Procedure is valid only for vehicles that show the CE code in the ElsaWeb Campaign/Action Information screen on the day of repair.

^ Vehicle must be within the Limited New Vehicle Warranty.

^ Procedure must be performed within the allotted time frame stated in this Technical Service Bulletin.

^ Procedure must be performed on applicable vehicles in Dealer inventory prior to sale.

Technical Background

On Audi Q7 vehicles manufactured within a specific period, the rear axle differential may have been fitted with non-tempered bevel gears, which can exhibit a high degree of wear after a short period of service.

Production Solution

Service

On all affected vehicles the number of the rear axle differential must be checked and, if necessary, the axle oil must also be checked. If the wear is excessive, the rear axle differential must be replaced.

Checking rear axle differential

1. Raise vehicle and compare number of rear axle differential with numbers on enclosed list.

^ If the rear axle differential number is not within the ranges specified in the enclosed chart, no further work is required.

^ If the rear axle differential number is within the ranges specified on the enclosed chart, continue to Step 2 to check axle oil for metal shavings.

Affected Differential Code Ranges

2. Drain rear differential axle oil into a suitable (clean) container.

3. Stir the oil using a suitable (clean) bar magnet. Wipe the oil off the magnet with a clean paper towel.

^ If a large quantity of metal shavings collects on the paper towel, the rear axle differential must be replaced. Follow the directions in the Workshop Manual, Transfer box and final drives, Rep. Gr. 39, Final drive - rear differential; Removing and installing rear final drive.

To order a rear differential, please contact special services at the website. Please provide the affected VIN and applicable differential number with your request.

^ By comparison, if only a small quantity of isolated shavings and abrasion is visible, the rear axle differential is OK.
