Removing
Affects vehicles with air suspension
- Place vehicle on hoist.

Affects all vehicles
- Remove noise insulation.

Support engine with engine support bridge
- Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 B
- Support 4.2L FSI engine completely with engine support bridge





- Check if there is a factory marking (paint dot) on front drive shaft and drive shaft flange. If not, mark position of drive shaft constant velocity joint - arrow A - to drive shaft flange on front final drive - arrow B - with paint.





- Remove drive shaft from front rear final drive - arrows A - and tie up.





- Disconnect electrical connector - arrow - at Servotronic Solenoid Valve N119.





- If present, remove shielding plate - A - from steering gear (2 bolts).

Note:
^ Only remove universal joint from steering gear with front wheels in straight ahead position.
^ Do not change steering wheel position and steering gear position.

- Remove bolt - B - for universal joint at steering gear and remove universal joint from steering gear.





- Disconnect left and right connectors - 2 -.





- Place Engine/Transmission Jack V.A.G 1383 A with wooden block under subframe and press lightly against.





- Remove bolts - 4 -.
- Lower subframe approx. 200 mm with Engine/Transmission Jack V.A.G 1383 A -.

Bonded rubber bushings at front in direction of travel, removing and installing





- Remove bolts - 1 - to - 4 -.
- Remove stabilizer bar - 5 -.

Bonded rubber bushing, pressing out





- Attach supporting ring T10301/8 so that narrow side - arrow - faces subframe.

Supporting ring T10301/8 must be able to be attached easily and must not be canted.





- Attach tools as depicted in illustration.
1. Press piece T10301/5
2. Support ring T10301/8
3. Tube T10301/3
4. Spacer T10301/9
5. Hydraulic cylinder VAS 6178
6. Nut T10301/2
7. Spindle T10301/1
- Press out bonded rubber bushing.

CAUTION!
Secure hydraulic cylinder VAS 6178 while pressing out.


Installation position





One of the arrows - 1 - must point in direction of travel.

Pressing in bonded rubber bushing





- Attach thrust piece T10301/10 with open side to subframe.

CAUTION!
When pressing in bonded rubber bushing, make sure that thrust piece T10301/10 is in correct position to prevent subframe from damage.






- Attach tools as depicted in illustration.

3. Thrust pad T10301/10
4. Spacer T10301/11
5. Hydraulic cylinder VAS 6178
6. Nut T10301/2
7. Spindle T10301/1
- Press in bonded rubber bushing until shoulder lies gap-free at subframe sleeve.

Bonded rubber bushings at rear in direction of travel, removing and installing

Bonded rubber bushing, pressing out





- Attach tools as depicted in illustration.

2. Support ring T10301/8
3. Tube T10301/3
4. Hydraulic cylinder VAS 6178
5. Nut T10301/2
6. Spindle T10301/1
- Press out bonded rubber bushing.

CAUTION!
Secure hydraulic cylinder VAS 6178 while pressing out.


Installation position





One of the arrows - 1 - must point in direction of travel.

- Attach tools as depicted in illustration.

2. Bonded rubber bushing
3. Thrust pad T10301/6
4. Hydraulic cylinder VAS 6178
5. Nut T10301/2
6. Spindle T10301/1
- Press in bonded rubber bushing until shoulder lies gap-free at subframe sleeve.

Installing
Installation is in reverse order of removal, with special attention to:
- Tighten drive shaft.
- Tighten wheels.
- On vehicles with air suspension, position vehicle on wheels.
- Bleed steering system.
- Check power steering fluid level.
- Check steering system for leaks.
