91 08 092015528/4
April 1, 2008
Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 91 number 08-01 dated January 11, 2008 to revise procedure and add models.
Vehicle Information
MMI: Sporadic cracking noises, audio dropouts or completely inoperative
Condition
Sporadic cracking noises or audio dropouts in all audio sources.
Complete failure of the MMI system frozen or blank screen.
Tip:
Multimedia Control Head E380 is ruled out as the root cause.
Technical Background
A MOST component causes interruptions of the optical data communication. One of the following components may be the most likely root cause of this condition:
^ MP3-capable CD changer R-41 4E0 035 110 A or 4L0 035 110 (both HW Version 044).
Tip:
The CD changers 4E0 035 111 A and 4L0 035 111 are not affected.
Audi Music Interface AMI (both MY) 4E0 910 785 or ...B (if applicable)
Telephone transceiver R-36 (both MY) 4F0 910 336D or ...E (if applicable)
Production Solution
Improvement with MP3-capable CD changer Hardware 045 after VIN range.
Service
1. Connect a recommended battery charger to the designated charging posts in the vehicle.
Tip:
To avoid false readings of the battery manager, don't charge the battery directly at its posts.
2. Disconnect the optical connection of the CD changer R-41. Install the flat contact housing (MOST loop) 4E0 973 802.
^ If the symptom disappears, replace the CD changer
^ If the symptom remains, proceed to step 3.
3. Disconnect the optical connection of the Audi Music Interface (if applicable). Install the flat contact housing (MOST loop) 4E0 973 802.
^ If the symptom disappears, replace the control module.
^ If the symptom still remains, proceed to step 4.
4. Disconnect the optical connection of the Telephone transceiver R-36 (if applicable). Install the flat contact housing (MOST loop) 4E0 973 802.
If the symptom disappears, replace the control module with part number 4F0 910 336 E and code it to 10900. In the telephone transceiver, ensure that adaption value 133 is set to 1 and adaptation value 134 is set to 0.
Tip:
In case the part number of the replaced component is 4F0 910 336 D, a MMI Software Zug Update has to be performed. Only model year 2007 vehicles are affected.
^ If the symptom still remains, proceed to step 5.
5. Proceed to individually loop Radio Tuner, Navigation, SDARS Tuner, and Gateway. (If you loop Gateway, you must push the on/off button to turn the MMI on.) Remove speech input control module J507 and swap Headunit J523 and amplifier until the malfunctioning component is identified.
^ If the symptom still remains, open a TACS ticket.
MMI Software Zug Update Procedure in case Telephone Transceiver 4F0 910 336D was Replaced with 4F0 910 336E:
1. Eject any inserted CDs from the CD changer and load MMI Zug Update CD 4L0 906 961 H in position 1.
2. Write down all settings to restore them after the update.
Tip:
All sound settings may be set to default after the update. Depending on the installed MMI components, further settings (Previous/Memory station list, stored CD name, directory entries) may be lost.
3. Press and hold the MMI Control Head - buttons Setup and Return simultaneously until the following screen appears:
4. Press the lower right soft key of the MMI Control Head to enter the SWUpdate menu.
5. Use the central control knob of the MMI Control Head to select CD-ROM and then Standard.
6. The screen below, which may take a few seconds to appear, shows the current software status of the MMI component in comparison to the inserted Update CD.
Tip:
The picture shows an example and may not match the actual MMI screen display.
7. Scroll down the component list with the central control knob and select Start download.
8. Note and obey the displayed message to avoid component breakdowns. Scroll down the screen to accept the following update with OK.
The MMI component update lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the installed components.
After initialization of the updated components, the following screen (or a similar one) appears.
Tip:
The displayed status Not OK and - are update related and not a fault. Please ignore and proceed.
^ If you scroll down the component list, you may discover that not all necessary component updates were performed in the first step (not all OK). In this case, select Try again to perform the missing component update.
^ If all necessary components are updated (0 NOK), select Restart MMI to reset the MMI system.
9. Eject Update CD 4L0 906 961 H and re-insert the removed CDs, if applicable.
10. Connect the VAS scantool to the vehicle and erase all sporadic fault codes.
11. Due to the MMI system software update, SVM has to be performed. Use action code:
^ NA4EK814 for A8
^ NA4FK814 for A6
^ NA4LK814 for Audi Q7
Tips:
After GFF scans all modules, if it states you need to update another module, select No.
^ It is normal for GFF to state The SVM action code leads to no result, please contact Technical Assistance. It is not necessary to contact Technical Assistance; the procedure is complete.
For further SVM update instructions and troubleshooting, please refer to the SVM Operating Manual; ElsaWeb
When procedure applies to vehicles under warranty, use the table.
