April 30, 2008
Supercedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 48 number 07-01 dated December 20, 2007 to add MY 2009.
Vehicles Affected
Electrically adjustable steering column is malfunctioning or losing its settings
Condition
^ Electric steering column adjustment does not work or has restricted adjustment movement.
^ Incorrect operation of Easy Entry according to TSB 2015819 can be ruled out.
Steering is not compromised by this condition.
Technical Background
Due to external forces, the stored end positions of the electric steering column adjustment do not match the real end positions. External forces may be the customer's pulling on the moving steering wheel while exiting the vehicle or the customer's legs blocking the steering column movement. In seldom cases it may be a binding issue of the steering column.
Production Solution
No change.
Service
1. Find out how the customer is exiting the vehicle. If applicable, inform the customer not to put pressure on the steering wheel during its adjustment.
2. To verify the free movement of the steering column, perform the following steps:
a. Remove the steering column trim and detach the right upper bolt (Figure 1, Point 2).
b. Use a feeler gauge to measure the gap between the steering column and cross carrier.
^ If the gap is less than 0.3 mm:
1. Perform the basic settings in the 09-Electronic central electrics module J519 after refitting the column. A reset of the control unit may be necessary.
2. If the procedure is still unsuccessful, please access the 09-Electronic central electrics module J519 and store or write down the values of measurement value block 3. Open a TACS ticket for further instruction.
^ If the gap is bigger than 0.3 mm, access the 09-Electronic central electrics module J519 and store or write down the values of measurement value block 3. Carry out the Service solution in TSB 2017266 for this condition.
