Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 38 number 08-16 dated December 16, 2008 for reasons listed below.

Affected Vehicles

Condition

REVISION HISTORY

Hard gearshift (e.g., 4 to 5, 6 to 4, 5 to 3) when accelerating.

Technical Background

Because of internal wear in the pressure modulation valve in the valve body, the clutch pressure cannot be correctly controlled. As a result, too much pressure is available when changing gear. This causes hard gear changes.

Production Solution

Internal valve body improvements.

Service

It is not necessary to receive an authorization number from the Technical Assistance Center for the repair described in this bulletin.

1. Try to reproduce the customer complaint so that it can be ascertained that this TSB applies. The following repair must only be carried out if all the criteria match exactly.

2. Check and adjust the oil level according to ElsaWeb.

3. Perform an adaptation drive.

a. Delete programmed values.

b. Ensure the ATF temperature is over 65°C.

c. Perform basic settings with VAG tester:

^ Self-diagnosis - 02-gearbox - basic settings - 001 - activate (accelerator pedal programming) Turn the ignition on. With the gear lever in P, press the accelerator pedal to the floor for 10 seconds.

^ Guided functions - 02 gearbox > basic settings -accelerator pedal programming2) 02 gearbox - basic settings - 002 - activate. (Delete programmed values gearbox.)

Note:
After a software update or after replacing the automatic gearbox or the control unit, the following adaptation drive must be performed.

d. Adaptation drive.

i. Warm up the engine. The ATF temperature must be between 66 and 110°C. (See gearbox MVB 06/01.)

ii. Gearshift programming in stationary vehicle:

1. In a vehicle that is stationary with the engine running, press the brakes.

2. Change from N to D and hold for 5 seconds.

3. Repeat 5 times.

4. Repeat the procedure 5 times but change from N to R.

iii. Programming for gear change control:

1. Accelerate in driving mode (D) with a throttle valve opening between 25 and 30% until you reach 6th gear and at least 80 km/h.

2. Release the accelerator pedal and let the vehicle roll to standstill. Stay in driving mode (D).

3. After 60 seconds at the latest, stop the vehicle by braking lightly.

4. Repeat 10 times.

iv. Check whether the jolting has improved.

4. If the hard gear changes cannot be reproduced after the adaptation drive, no further repairs are necessary.

5. If the gear changes are still hard, replace the valve body per ElsaWeb.

^ All the valve body mounting bolts must be replaced.

^ Another adaptation drive must be performed after the valve body is replaced. (See Step 3.)
