Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 24 number 10-34 dated June 16, 2010 for reasons listed below.

Affected Vehicles

Condition

^ Engine doesn't start.

^ The following DTC entries may be logged in the fault memory individually or in combination:

^ P0087 (Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low).

^ P0088 (Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too High).

^ P310 B (Low Fuel Pressure Regulation, fuel pressure outside of tolerance).

Technical Background

A general increase of the rail pressure after shutting off engine is normal, but rail pressure that is too high (above 140bar) can prevent the starting authorization.

This can be caused by incorrectly installed or malfunctioning pressure relief valves or a blockage on the low fuel pressure system return lines.

Production Solution

No change.

Service

Engine does not start, with no DTC entry:

1. In Guided Fault Finding, look for perception symptoms without entry. When the memory is empty, follow the following path in GFF: Complaint report >> Complaint related to observation >> Powertrain (RG 01; 10-39) >> Engine >> Start >> Engine does not start after short standing time. Press accept. Press green arrow on right to proceed.

2. Check the fuel pressure.
If the engine does not start although the low pressure system is correct, the following message appears in the test program: "If the engine only does not start when hot, a stuck pressure relief valve or a blockage in the low pressure return system may cause the condition. Because of the hot engine, the fuel expands after switching off the engine and increases the fuel pressure to such an extent that the engine control unit can prevent an engine start. Let the engine cool down and try to start the engine. If the engine starts when the vehicle is cool, check the pressure relief valve and the low pressure return system."

When DTC entries are present:

1. First check the low and high pressure in the fuel system using the appropriate MVB for the rail fuel pressure in GFF.

2. If both the low and high fuel pressures are correct, check the low fuel pressure return lines and the pressure relief valves in the rail for a blockage. Replace them if necessary.

Follow GFF consistently to the end to avoid any unnecessary parts replacement.
