Vehicle Information
Condition
TIP:
This technical solution only applies if all conditions are met simultaneously.
- The MMI High navigation is inoperative, and the message Navigation not available is displayed.
- The navigation control unit (address 37) cannot be reached via diagnosis.
- In the open circuit diagnosis, the navigation is shown as inoperative (no response from unit).
- The navigation DVD cannot be ejected.
- After a terminal 30 reset of the navigation control unit, the system works again.
Technical Background
Communication malfunction in the navigation's firmware (internal software).
Production Solution
Improved firmware 1.98 for the navigation control unit.
Service
The firmware of the navigation drive has to be updated if the version is below 1.98.
1. Reset the navigation control unit (remove fuse or unplug connector) to establish tester communication.
TIP:
During the update process, a stable power supply is necessary. Ignoring this can lead to hardware failure.
2. Identify the current firmware version. Select Vehicle Self Diagnosis >> 37 - Navigation >> Identification (1A) >> Control unit identification >> Software version.
The fourth row reflects the firmware version (e.g. 58 00.01.81 is firmware version 1.81). If the version is below 1.98, complete the following firmware update procedure.
Firmware update procedure:
1. Ensure that the closed-circuit voltage of the vehicle battery is at least 12.5 V. If not, connect an authorized battery charger or battery maintainer to the specified charging leads.
2. Disconnect the VAS tester from the vehicle, if applicable, and do not perform any actions (raise or lower windows, adjust lights, etc.) during the update.
3. Switch the ignition on and off. Leave ignition off.
4. Switch on the MMI with the on/off knob of the MMI controller.
5. Eject the Navigation DVD, and insert Update CD 4E0 906 961 AJ into the navigation drive.
6. Select the Navigation Menu in the MMI and confirm the Update request message, which appears after 10-15 seconds on the MMI screen. The software update takes about 2 minutes from inserting the Update CD to the automatic navigation reset.
7. After the Update CD has been read, the red navigation drive LED lights flash regularly.
8. After approximately 15 seconds, the Update CD is automatically ejected and must be removed from the slot. In case it is inserted again, it can be removed after the second ejection.
9. The red navigation drive LED lights are still regularly flashing. After approximately 20 seconds, the drive automatically resets and the LEDs light permanently.
10. Reinsert the original Navigation DVD. As this software update is not supported by the MMI system, the progress is always shown as 0%.
11. Remove the 0% progress display with a three-finger reset on the control panel. Press the lower left control button (either TEL or SETUP) + large knob + top right knob at the same time. (See vehicle MMI operating instructions under Start MMI system reset for more instructions.)
If you do not perform a three-finger reset, the system takes a long time to power down.
12. Verify the successful update of the firmware. Select Vehicle Self Diagnosis >> 37 - Navigation >> Identification (1A) >> Control unit identification >> Software version and verify that the number in the fourth row ends with 1.98 (e.g. 58 00.01.98 for Firmware version 1.98)
