ServiceOn all affected vehicles the number of the rear axle differential must be checked and, if necessary, the axle oil must also be checked. If the wear is excessive, the rear axle differential must be replaced.
Checking rear axle differential
1. Raise vehicle and compare number of rear axle differential with numbers on the list shown in this bulletin.
^ If the rear axle differential number is not within the ranges specified in the chart above, no further work is required.
^ If the rear axle differential number is within the ranges specified on the chart above, continue to Step 2 to check axle oil for metal shavings.
2. Drain rear differential axle oil into a suitable (clean) container.
3. Stir the oil using a suitable (clean) bar magnet. Wipe the oil off the magnet with a clean paper towel.
^ If a large quantity of metal shavings collects on the paper towel, the rear axle differential must be replaced.

^ By comparison, if only a small quantity of isolated shavings and abrasion is visible, the rear axle differential is OK.
a. Fit new drain plug (Part. No.: 0AA 409 057; tightening torque: 35 Nm).
b. Unscrew sealing plug in order to check oil.
c. Top oil level to lower lip of filler hole. (Oil Part No.: G 052 145 S2.)
d. Fit new sealing plug (Part No.: 0AA 409 057; tightening torque: 35 Nm).
