Removing
- Before starting, take a tape measure and measure the distance - a - from the center of the wheel to the lower edge of the wheel housing. Refer to => [ Wheel Bearing in Curb Weight, Lifting Vehicles with Coil Spring ] Wheel Bearing In Curb Weight, Lifting Vehicles With Coil Springor => [ Wheel Bearing in Control Position, Lifting Vehicles with Air Suspension ] Wheel Bearing In Control Position, Lifting Vehicles With Air Suspension.
- Loosen the 12-point nut for the drive axle on the wheel hub. Refer to => [ Drive Axle Outer Joint Twelve Point Nut, Loosening and Tightening ] Rear Suspension.
The wheel bearing must not be under a load while the drive axle threaded connection on the wheel side is loose.
If the wheel bearings are under the load of the vehicle's own weight, the wheel bearing will be damaged. This reduces the service life of the wheel bearings.
The 12-point nut may only be loosened a maximum of 90° when the vehicle is resting on its wheels.
Vehicles without a drive axle must not be moved, otherwise the wheel bearing will be damaged. If a vehicle must be moved, be sure to note the following:
• Install an outer joint in place of the drive axle.
• Tighten the outer joint to 150 Nm.
Vehicles with An Air Spring Shock Absorber
- Activate the vehicle lift mode and place the vehicle on the lifting platform. Refer to => [ Vehicle Lift Mode ] Vehicle Lift Mode.
- Bleed the rear air spring damper using the vehicle diagnosis tester.
Continuation for All
- Loosen the wheel bolts.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Remove the wheel.
- Disconnect the connectors - 2 and 1 - where installed.
- Disconnect the wire - 3 - from the bracket on the wheel bearing housing.
- Remove the threaded connection - 4 and 5 - from the cable bracket.
- Disconnect the connector from the brake pad wear display.
- Move the wiring harness to the side.
- Turn the wheel hub until one of the holes for the wheel bolts is on the bottom.
- Set up the tools as shown in the figure.
1. Remover (T10103/1)
2. Remover (T10103)
3. Mount (T10149)
4. Engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A)
- Support the wheel bearing housing.
- Loosen the threaded connection - 1 - between the suspension strut and the coupling rod at the wheel bearing housing.
- Separate the threaded connection - 2 - between the tie rod and the wheel bearing housing.
- Loosen the threaded connection - 5 - on the lower transverse link.
- Remove the threaded connection - 3 - on the upper rear transverse link.
- Remove the threaded connection - 4 - on the upper front transverse link.
- Unclip the brake cable from the subframe and free it up.
- Attach the (T10038) - 2 - to the crossmember - 1 - and wheel bearing housing - 3 - and pretension it slightly.
- Remove the (V.A.G 1383 A) from the wheel bearing housing.
- Carefully release the tension on the (T10038) - 2 - and move the wheel bearing housing approximately 45° vertically toward the outside with another technician. At the same time remove the drive axle from the inner splines using the (T10103/1).
• Be careful not to damage any other parts when moving the wheel bearing housing.
• Ensure sufficient freedom of movement of the joints during the pressing-out operation by tilting the wheel bearing housing further upward.
- Tilt the outer joint out of the wheel hub.
- Secure the drive axle to keep it from falling.
- Remove the drive axle - 1 - at the transmission flange with a plastic-coated assembly lever - arrow -.
- Remove the drive axle.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
- Before assembling, coat the outer joint gearing with assembly paste.
Remove any paint residue and/or corrosion on the outer joint threads/splines.
- Insert a new securing ring into the groove of the inner CV joint.
- Bring outer and inner splines of joint piece and transmission into engagement.
- Push the drive axle into the joint piece to the stop.
- Now push the joint piece with one jerk onto the transmission inner gearing.
• Never use a hammer or mallet!
- Make sure the joint piece fits securely. The joint pulls against the resistance of the circlip.
When checking, only pull on the joint piece and not on the drive axle.
- Install the outer joint as far as possible into the wheel hub splines.
- Pull in the drive axle.
1. Fitting tool (T10206)
- Tighten the threaded connections at the wheel bearing housing by hand.
• Only bolt the wheel bearing housing when the dimension "a" is reached (=> [ Wheel Bearing in Curb Weight, Lifting Vehicles with Coil Spring ] Wheel Bearing In Curb Weight, Lifting Vehicles With Coil Spring) and (=> [ Wheel Bearing in Control Position, Lifting Vehicles with Air Suspension ] Wheel Bearing In Control Position, Lifting Vehicles With Air Suspension)
- Tighten the threaded connections on the wheel bearing housing. Refer to => [ Wheel Bearing Housing, Wheel Hub and Wheel Bearing Overview ] Rear Axle Overview.
- If the vehicle has an air suspension, fill the system using the vehicle diagnostic tester.
- Loosen the 12-point nut for the drive axle on the wheel hub. Refer to => [ Drive Axle Outer Joint Twelve Point Nut, Loosening and Tightening ] Rear Suspension.
- Install the wheel and tighten the wheel bolts.
