ATF Level, Checking

ATF Level, Checking

Test Conditions

The transmission must not be in the emergency running

The vehicle must be horizontal.

Selector lever in P and engine at idle

The A/C and the heater are off.

Vehicle diagnosis tester connected, select Vehicle Self-Diagnosis.

At the start of the testing, the ATF temperature must not be higher than 30 °C (86 °F); let the transmission cool down.

The vehicle diagnosis tester reads the ATF temperature.

The ATF level will vary according to the temperature of the ATF.

Performing ATF level check when the ATF temperature is too low causes overfilling.

Performing ATF level check when the ATF temperature is too high causes underfilling.

Overfilling or underfilling will influence the function of the transmission.

Only use the ATF available as a replacement part for the planetary gear in automatic transmission 09E. Other oils could cause malfunctions or damage the transmission. Follow the ATF specifications provided for the appropriate transmission codes.

Check the ATF temperature

- Connect the vehicle diagnosis tester.

- Turn on the ignition and select Vehicle Self-Diagnosis.

Comparison of selector lever position with position on multifunction transmission range switch (F125) in transmission:

- Select 08 - Read Measured Value Block in - 1 -.

Display on the vehicle diagnosis tester:

- Press 4 in field - 1 - for display group 4 and then press Q to confirm the entry.

Display on the vehicle diagnosis tester:

- Read the ATF temperature in the display field - 1 -.

ATF, Checking Level and Correcting

The ATF level is checked at the ATF inspection plug.

The ATF level is correct if a small amount of fluid drips out of the inspection opening (this is normal as the fluid expands as it heats up) at an ATF temperature between 35 °C and 45 °C (95 °F and 113 °F) (for hot countries 50 °C (122 °F).

CAUTION!
Different types of ATF are available for this transmission.

Only use the ATF available as a replacement part for the planetary gear in automatic transmission 09E.

Other oils can cause malfunctions or transmission failure.

The ATF filler tool must be clean and the ATF must not be mixed with any other ATF.

- Fill the ATF filling system (V.A.G 1924) with ATF for automatic transmission 09E.

- Secure reservoir of (V.A.G 1924) as high as possible on vehicle.

- Start the engine and let it idle.

- Loosen quick-release fasteners - 2 - and remove rear noise insulation.

- Place the used oil extraction and collection device (V.A.G 1782) below the transmission.

CAUTION!
Wear protective eye-wear.

- When ATF temperature of 35 °C (95 °F) is reached, remove the ATF inspection plug - arrow B - and drain off any excess ATF.

If ATF drips from ATF inspection hole before ATF has reached 40 °C (104 °F), ATF level - arrow - is OK.

The ATF inspection plug must be installed again before the ATF reaches a temperature of 45 °C (113 °F) (50 °C (122 °F) with hot climates).

- Fasten ATF inspection plug with new gasket - arrow - to 80 Nm. The ATF level test is now completed.

If no ATF drips out of the ATF inspection opening when the temperature has reached 40 °C (104 °F):

Filling the ATF

The ATF inspection plug must be installed again before the ATF reaches 45 °C (113 °F) (50 °C (122 °F) for countries with hot climates). Let the transmission cool down and check again.

- Guide filler hook of (V.A.G 1924) from underneath into an opening in the cap - arrow -.

- Add ATF using (V.A.G 1924) until ATF drips from the check hole.

Too little or too much ATF will impair the transmission.

- Fasten ATF inspection plug with new gasket - arrow - to 80 Nm. The ATF level test is now completed.
