Steering Column






Steering Column

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1783)

Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051 B)

Universal low-temperature grease (G 052 745 A3) or universal grease (G 052 735 A2)

Special Screwdriver T8 (T40056 A)


Only if steering column is to be replaced:

First, check software version of Vehicle Electrical System Control Module (J519) using (VAS 5051 B).

When installing the steering column, the vehicle electrical system control module must also be replaced if software version is < 0190.

Remove vehicle electrical system control module.

The steering column is delivered only as a complete replacement part. Service is not possible.

The steering lock housing can be transferred.

Removing


Before removing steering wheel, wheels must be in straight-ahead position.

Follow safety precautions when working on airbag.

If these measures are not observed, the airbag system may not function properly during vehicle operation!

- Remove the driver airbag unit.

- Remove the airbag in the steering wheel. Refer to => [ Steering Wheel with Airbag ] Steering Wheel with Airbag.

- Remove the steering column switch. .

Applies to Vehicles with a Power Steering Column

- Remove the instrument cluster.

- Remove bolts - Arrows -.






Applies to Vehicles with a Manual Steering Column






- Remove bolts - arrows A - and remove handle.

Affects All Vehicles

- Remove the bolts - arrows B - and - arrows C - and remove the steering column trim.

- Remove the driver side storage compartment.

- Remove the seal - 2 - out of the bulkhead boot and from the universal joint.






- Remove the boot - 3 - from the steering gear and the plenum chamber bulkhead.

If the bulkhead boot - 3 - is damaged, always install a new one.

- Remove the bolt - 1 - and remove the universal joint from the steering gear pinion.

An assembly aid is required so that the upper and lower parts of the steering column do not pull apart when removing the steering gear.

If the upper and lower parts of the steering column are pulled too far apart or pushed too close together, the splines separate.

There may be rattling later if the splines are not in their original installation position.

- Secure the universal joint - 2 - with a cable tie - A - to the steering column - 1 -.






- Disconnect the connector on the left side of the steering column - arrow -.






- Disconnect the connector on the right side of the steering column - 2 -.






- Release and remove the bracket - 1 -.

Vehicles with Electrical Height Adjustment

- Disconnect the connectors (quantity 2) for the electric steering column height adjustment on the left side and remove from the steering column.

Continuation for All Vehicles

- Remove the bolts - 1 -, - 2 - and - 3 - and remove the steering column.






Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

New replacement steering columns are secured with transportation protection.

- Remove transportation protection after installing the steering column.

- Place the steering column on the cross member.

Installation Sequence






- Install the bolt - 1 - and tighten by hand.

- Install the bolt - 2 - and tighten.

- Install the bolts - 3 - and tighten.

- Tighten the bolt - 1 -.

- Coat the bulkhead boot contact surfaces with universal low-temperature grease (G 052 745 A3).

- Install the bulkhead boots - 3 - and seal - 2 - loosely onto the steering column.






- Bring the steering wheel into the center position, then mount the universal joint with the bulkhead boot and seal onto the steering pinion.

- Tighten the bolt - 1 - for the universal joint.

- Mount the bulkhead boot - 3 - onto the drive gear and insert it into the plenum chamber bulkhead.

- Install the seal - 2 - into the bulkhead boot - 3 -:

The markings - arrow A - and - arrow B - must point vertically downward.

- Remove the cable ties.

- Install the driver side stowage compartment.

- Install the steering column switch trim and the switch.

- Install the steering wheel airbag. Refer to => [ Steering Wheel with Airbag ] Steering Wheel with Airbag.

- Install the handle for the steering column adjustment and tighten the screws to 2.5 Nm.

- Install the airbag unit on the driver side.

- Electric steering column lock, Steering Angle Sensor (G85) and "basic setting" in vehicle electrical system control module must be learned anew or adapted in the next work step.

- Connect (VAS 5051) and with the "Function/component selection" select the function test.

Then

- "Chassis (Repair group 01; 34 - 65)".

- "Steering (Repair Group 48)".

- "Steering column network, functions".

- "Replace steering column".
