Torque wrench (40-200 Nm) (VAG 1332)

Engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383A)

Wheel hub support (T10149)

Ball joint puller (T40042)

Wood block (hardwood) 30 x 50 x 1,000 mm

Removing

- Place the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on the Hoist and on its Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on the Hoist and on its Wheels.

- Remove the wheel covers, remove the cover cap on light alloy wheels (removal hook in vehicle tool kit).

- Remove the wheel.

- Secure the brake disc with a wheel bolt.

- Loosen the quick release fasteners - 1 - and - 2 - and remove the noise insulation.

- Remove the stabilizer bar. Refer to => [ Stabilizer Bar ] Stabilizer Bar.

To prevent the ball joints from bending too much, the wheel bearing housing must be supported during the following steps.

- Install the (T10149) using a wheel heel bolt.

- Install the (T10149) on the (VAG 1383A) and support the wheel bearing housing. The dimension - a - is not considered.

- Remove the nut for the track control arm to the wheel bearing housing far enough so that it is flush with threads of the ball stud.

- Counter hold the ball stud using 6 mm hex wrench. Shorten the hex wrench to do this, if necessary.

- Press the track control arm out of the wheel bearing housing using the (T40042) and remove the nut.

Be careful not to damage the Constant Velocity (CV) joint boot in the process!

Make sure that both puller lever arms are parallel to each other when using greatest force.

Prevent the ball joint puller from falling down.

- Remove the level control system sensor coupling rod - 1 - from the track control arm.

- Remove the air spring damper bolt - 3 - from the track control arm.

- Press the track control arm - 1 - down using a wood block - arrow A - far enough so the air spring damper - 2 - can be removed forward - arrow B -. A second technician is needed for this.

- Move the steering to the left for the left track control arm and to the right for the right track control arm.

- Remove the track control arm bolt and nut from the subframe.

- Press the wheel bearing housing outward and remove the track control arm from the subframe.

- Pull the track control arm forward diagonally out of the wheel bearing housing.

- If the track control arm is installed again, remove the locking compound from the ball joint threads first.

Installing

Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Observe the following when doing so:

- Tighten the bolts/nuts on components with bonded rubber bushings by hand. Raise the wheel bearing housing to tighten the bolts/nuts. Refer to => [ Wheel Bearing Housing, Raising to Control Position to Tighten Bolts ] Front Suspension.

- Install the vehicle level control system sensor coupling rod - 1 - to the control arm. Refer to => [ Front Level Control System Sensor ] Level Control System.

- Install the left and right connecting links - 2 -. Refer to - items 10 and 12 - in => [ Track Control Arm, Guide Link and Level Control System Sensor Assembly Overview ] Service and Repair.

- Install the bolt - 3 - from the air spring damper to the control arm. Refer to - item 19 - in => [ Track Control Arm, Guide Link and Level Control System Sensor Assembly Overview ] Service and Repair.

- Tighten the stabilizer bar bolts. Refer to - item 20 - in => [ Subframe, Engine Carrier and Stabilizer Bar Assembly Overview ] Subframe, Engine Carrier and Stabilizer Bar Assembly Overview.

- Install the track control arm and nut to the wheel bearing housing. Refer to => [ Track Control Arm, Guide Link and Level Control System Sensor Assembly Overview ] Service and Repair.

- Install noise insulation.

- Install the wheel and tighten.

- Place the vehicle on its wheels. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on the Hoist and on its Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on the Hoist and on its Wheels.
