Electrical and Electronic Component Locations

1 Transmission Control Module (TCM) for multitronic (J217 )

Component location, refer to => [ Transmission Control Module (TCM) for multitronic ] , or => [ Transmission Control Module (TCM) for multitronic ]

Control module is tested by the On Board Diagnostic (OBD) system.

Removal and installation, refer to => Automatic Transmission/Transaxle Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

2 Hydraulic unit

Component location, refer to => [ Hydraulic unit ] , or => [ Hydraulic unit ]

Valves are tested by the OBD system.

Removal and installation, refer to => Automatic Transmission/Transaxle Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

3 Shift control mechanism cover

Removal and installation, refer to => Automatic Transmission/Transaxle Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

4 Tiptronic Switch (F189)

Component location: Integral with the printed circuit board which is located in the cover for the shift control mechanism.

Consists of 3 Hall sensors which are triggered by a solenoid on the transverse slide of the roll cover.

Can be tested in measured value block. Refer to => [ Reading Measured Value Block ] Reading Measured Value Block.

In the event of Tiptronic switch malfunctions, first check whether the solenoid is properly attached to the roll cover, if necessary replace the transverse slide. The circuit board must not be replaced until the wiring connections have been inspected.

Removal and installation, refer to => Automatic Transmission/Transaxle Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

5 Shift lock solenoid (N110)

Can be tested in the measured value block, refer to => [ Reading Measured Value Block ] Reading Measured Value Block and in electrical testing, refer to => [ Electrical Testing ] Electrical Testing.

Removal and installation, refer to => Automatic Transmission/Transaxle Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

6 Data Link Connector (DLC)

Component location, refer to => [ Data Link Connector (DLC) ]

7 Cruise control switch (E45)

Removal and installation, refer to => Lighting and Horns Lighting and Horns

8 Park/Neutral Position (PNP) relay (J226)

Component location, refer to => [ Relay for Power Supply Terminal 87 and ] , or => [ Relay for Power Supply Terminal 87 and ]

9 Power supply relay terminal 87

Component location, refer to => [ Relay for Power Supply Terminal 87 and ]

10 Transmission Range (TR) Display (Y6)

Flashing transmission range display indicates a critical defect. Refer to => [ Transmission Control Module ] Transmission Control Module.

Fully illuminated transmission range display indicates a simple defect. Refer to => [ Transmission Control Module ] Transmission Control Module.

No display points to a wiring fault or a faulty display ( Y6).

11 Kick Down Switch (F8)

No mechanical switch. A specific value from the throttle position sensors (G79)/ (G185) is saved in the Engine Control Module (ECM).

Signal transmission from the ECM to the Transmission Control Module (TCM) over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus.

Can be tested in measured value block. Refer to => [ Reading Measured Value Block ] Reading Measured Value Block.

Accelerator pedal module removal and installation, refer to => Fuel Delivery and Air Induction Fuel Delivery and Air Induction

12 Brake light switch (F)

Can be tested in measured value block, refer to => [ Reading Measured Value Block ] Reading Measured Value Block.

Removal and installation, refer to => Brakes and Traction Control Brakes and Traction Control

Transmission Control Module (TCM) for multitronic (J217)

Component location: The TCM is mounted at the rear of the transmission, directly on the hydraulic unit.

The following components are integrated in the control module.

A - Transmission output speed (RPM) sensor (G195 ) and Transmission output speed (RPM) sensor 2 ( G196)

B - Transmission fluid temperature sensor (G93 )

C - Multi function Transmission Range (TR) switch (F125)

D - Transmission input speed (RPM) sensor (G182 )

E - Automatic transmission hydraulic pressure sensor 1 (G193)

F - Automatic transmission hydraulic pressure sensor 2 (G194)

CAUTION!
Always perform the adaptation after installing a new TCM. Refer to => [ Adaptation ] Adaptation.

Hydraulic unit

Component location: The hydraulic unit is bolted to the rear of the transmission. The TCM is bolted directly to the hydraulic unit.

A - Wiring connector for automatic transmission pressure regulating valve 1 (N215)

A - Wiring connector for automatic transmission pressure regulating Valve 2 (N216)

C - Wiring connector for solenoid valve 1 (N88 )

The following valves are integral on the hydraulic unit (not shown here):

1. Automatic transmission pressure regulating valve 1 (N215); clutch solenoid valve

2. Automatic transmission pressure regulating valve 2 (N216); transmission ratio solenoid valve

3. Solenoid valve 1 (N88); clutch cooling/safety cutoff

4. Clutch cooling valve

5. Minimum pressure valve

6. Pressure control valve

7. Clutch control valve

8. Control pressure valve

You will find a more precise description and operation of the individual valves in:

Shift Lock Solenoid (N110 )

Component location: The shift lock solenoid is located in the shift control mechanism - arrow -.

Data Link Connector (DLC)

Component location: The DLC is located under the knee bolster to the left of the steering wheel.

Cruise Control Switch (E45 )

Component location: The cruise control switch is located on the steering column switch.

Transmission Range (TR) Display (Y6)

Component location: Integrated in the instrument cluster

The transmission range selector lever display can only be replaced together with the instrument cluster.

Relay for Power Supply Terminal 87 and Park/Neutral Position (PNP) Relay (J226)

Component location: On the relay carrier in the E-Box plenum.
