Seat Occupant Sensor: Service and Repair

Passive Occupant Detection System

CAUTION!
Observe the safety precautions for repairs on airbags. Refer to => [ Airbag System General Safety Precautions ] Airbag Safety Precautions, side airbags => [ Side Airbag Safety Precautions ] Airbag Safety Precautions and the seat occupied recognition system, refer to => [ Passenger Occupant Detection Sensor Safety Precautions ] Airbag Safety Precautions and => [ Passenger Occupant Detection System, Measures Required after an Accident ] Airbag Safety Precautions.

CAUTION!
Replacement part (service kit) for seat occupied sensor (USA) is already pre-calibrated and must not be disconnected under any circumstance. The service kit consists of:

Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module (J706)

Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor (G452)

Passive Occupant Detection System Mat

Seat cushion

Wiring harness between Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module (J706) and Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor (G452).

The passive occupant detection system is only installed on the front passenger seat.

For USA vehicles, modular wiring routing has been implemented from 06.2006.

Perform the following steps before removing the Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module (J706).

- Check the vehicle seat design and if there is modular wiring routing; then perform the appropriate repairs.

- Check which one of the two possible modulate wiring routing is installed, Modular Light or Modular. Refer to => [ Modular Wiring Routing Versions ] Front Seats

Additional information regarding modular wiring routing can be found in the following chapters:

Modular wiring routing, assembly overview, refer to => [ Modular Wiring Routing Assembly Overview, from June 2006 ] Front Seats

Modular wiring routing, versions, refer to => [ Modular Wiring Routing Versions ] Front Seats

Modular wiring routing with corrugated tube on front seat, refer to => [ Modular Wiring Routing with Corrugated Tube on Front Seat ] Front Seats.

Seat removed

With Modular Wiring Routing

- Open the corrugated tube. Refer to => [ Modular Wiring Routing with Corrugated Tube on Front Seat ] Front Seats.

- Remove the Service Kit wire from the corrugated tube. Refer to => [ Modular Wiring Routing with Corrugated Tube on Front Seat ] Front Seats.

Procedure for all vehicles

- Fold the cushion - 5 - upward.

The cushion is included as part of the service kit.

Clip - 4 - must not be separated.

The hard foam insert in the crease is not included in the service kit.

- Remove clips - 2 - and - 3 - (Qty. 2).

- Carefully pull seat occupied recognition mat - 1 - with cushion - 5 - upward while guiding Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor (G452) and Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module (J706) through seat pan without disconnecting connectors.

- Remove the complete service kit.

CAUTION!
The pressure hose and the Seat Occupied Recognition Mat - 1 - must not be kinked under any circumstances during repairs.

Service Kit, Installing

CAUTION!
Observe the safety precautions for repairs on airbags. Refer to => [ Airbag System General Safety Precautions ] Airbag Safety Precautions, side airbags => [ Side Airbag Safety Precautions ] Airbag Safety Precautions and the seat occupied recognition system => [ Passenger Occupant Detection Sensor Safety Precautions ] Airbag Safety Precautions and => [ Passenger Occupant Detection System, Measures Required after an Accident ] Airbag Safety Precautions.

The hard foam insert in the crease is not included in the service kit. Therefore, reuse the hard foam insert again in the seat crease.

- Guide Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor ( G452) and Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module (J706) from above through seat pan without disconnecting connectors.

- Pull the crease between seat pan and Seat Occupied Recognition Mat - 1 - so that it is smooth (free of folds).

- Secure the Seat Occupied Recognition Mat - 1 - with the clips - 2 - and - 3 - (Qty. 2).

With Modular Wiring Routing

- Route the Service Kit wire in the corrugated tube. Refer to => [ Modular Wiring Routing with Corrugated Tube on Front Seat ] Front Seats.

- Seal the corrugated tube. Refer to => [ Modular Wiring Routing with Corrugated Tube on Front Seat ] Front Seats.

Procedure for all vehicles

Installing

- Secure Seat Occupied Recognition Pressure Sensor (G452) - 4 -.

- Secure Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module ( J706) with bolts - 2 - (Qty. 2) to 2.5 Nm.

- Connect connector - 6 -.

- Upholster the seat pan, thereby all cushion clips must be attached and be installed at the original position. Refer to => [ Seat Pan Cover and Cushion, Standard Seat ] Front Seat Covers and Cushion, for electric seat => [ Seat Pan Cover and Cushion, Standard Seat ] Front Seat Covers and Cushion, Power Memory Seats.

Further installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Observe the following when doing so:

- After installing the passenger seat in the vehicle, the following program must be performed under "Airbag" in Guided Fault Finding.

When installing a new service kit and after every repair on the front passenger seat:

Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module (J706), basic setting

After the seat was installed

- Switch on the ignition with the battery disconnected.

CAUTION!
No one should be in vehicle when connecting battery.

- Connect the battery.

If the Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ( K75) shows a malfunction after assembly, DTC memory must be checked with Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System ( VAS 5051 A), cleared and then rechecked.
