Shift Mechanism Checking

Overview

1. Selector mechanism function test.

2. Checking ignition key removal lock.

3. Checking locking button on selector lever handle.

- If the shift mechanism does not function as described, perform " Guided Fault Finding" with vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051B).

1. Selector Mechanism Function Test

In selector lever positions "S", "D", " R" and "Tiptronic gate" the starter motor will not operate.

If selector lever position "N" is selected at speeds greater than 5 km/h, the selector lever lock solenoid must not engage and block selector lever. The selector lever can be shifted into a driving gear.

For speeds below 2 km/h (almost a stand still) and shifting into selector lever position "N", the shift lock solenoid must only engage after approximately 1 second. The selector lever can only be shifted out of position "N" with the brake pedal pressed.

Selector lever in "P" position and ignition switched on:

- Do not press the brake pedal.

Selector lever is locked and also cannot be shifted out of position " P" while the locking button on the selector lever handle is pressed. The shift lock solenoid (N110) blocks the selector lever.

- Press the brake pedal and hold.

The shift lock solenoid (N110) releases the selector lever. It must be possible to select a driving mode without " hitching" while the locking button on the selector lever handle is pressed.

Slowly shift selector lever from "P" through "R, N, D and S", checking whether the Transmission Range (TR) display (Y6) in the instrument cluster matches the selector lever position.

Selector lever in "N" position and ignition switched on:

- Do not press the brake pedal.

Selector lever is not locked immediately when rapidly shifting through positions "N" (e.g. from "R" to "D"). This enables e.g. "forward and reverse maneuvers" when the vehicle is stuck. Shift lock engages when the selector lever is located in " N" for longer than approximately 1 second with the brake not being pressed.

- Press the brake pedal.

The shift lock Solenoid (N110) releases the selector lever. It must be possible to select a driving mode without " hitching" while the locking button on the selector lever handle is pressed.

Selector lever in position "D", ignition switched on:

- Shift selector lever into the "Tiptronic gate".

Brightening of the "D" symbol must go out in the selector mechanism cover and "+" and "-" symbols must light up.

The Transmission Range (TR) display (Y6) in the instrument cluster should switch from "PRNDS" to " 7654321" when the selector lever is shifted into the "Tiptronic gate".

If specified values are not obtained:

- Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable Adjusting ] Adjustments.

- Check the ignition key removal lock.

2. Check Ignition Key Withdrawal Lock

- Switch the ignition key to the driving position ("ignition on").

- Press and hold the brake pedal.

It must be possible to shift the selector lever out of the " P" position without "hitching" while the locking button on the selector lever handle is pressed.

- Switch the ignition off.

It should not be possible to remove the ignition key when the selector lever is in any other position than "P".

- Place the selector lever in the "P" position.

It must be possible to move the ignition key into the removal position without "sticking".

- Remove the ignition key.

It must be possible to remove the ignition key only in the " P" position.

The selector lever cannot be shifted out of the "P" position with the locking button pressed and the parking brake operated.

3. Check Locking Button on Selector Lever Handle

Check the locking button for ease of movement:

It must be possible to press the locking button without great force.

After releasing, the locking button must come all the way back out by itself

If specified values are not obtained:

- Check whether the selector lever handle is installed correctly.

- Check whether the selector rod or selector lever is bent.

Function test:

Ignition switched on

The locking button on the selector lever handle must be pressed for the following shifts. If it is not pressed, the selector lever cannot be shifted into the specified position.

"P" to "R" and also press the brake pedal

"D" to "S"

"N" to "R"; in a stand still, also press brake pedal after long wait

"R" to "P"

If specified values are not obtained:

- Check whether the selector lever handle is installed correctly.

- Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable Adjusting ] Adjustments.
