Timing Mechanism Drive Chain
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Old oil collecting and extracting device (V.A.G 1782 )
• Locking pin (T40069)
• Securing pin (T40071)
Removing
• Transmission removed.
- Manual Transmission Remove clutch pressure plate. Refer to => Manual Transmission/Transaxle [1][2]Manual Transmission/Transaxle and dual mass flywheel => [ Dual Mass Flywheel ] Dual Mass Flywheel.
- Vehicles with multitronic transmission: Remove damper unit. Refer to => [ Damper Unit ] Damper Unit and flywheel => [ Flywheel ] Flywheel.
- Vehicles with automatic transmission: Remove drive plate. Refer to => [ Dual Mass Flywheel ] Dual Mass Flywheel.
• After removing transmission, the engine is supported by engine support bridge (10-222 A) and the torque support stop is loosened.
CAUTION!
For the further sequence of work, it must be made sure that the lock carrier is installed.
- To remove transmission, remove attached engine support bridge (10-222 A) from engine.
- Tighten torque support stop to 28 Nm - arrows -.
- Remove cylinder head cover. Refer to: Left => [ Left Cylinder Head Cover ] Left Cylinder Head Cover, right => [ Right Cylinder Head Cover ] Right Cylinder Head Cover.
- Remove left and right timing chain covers. Refer to => [ Left and Right Timing Chain Covers ] Left and Right Timing Chain Covers.
- Place old oil collecting and extracting device ( V.A.G 1782) under engine.
- Drain engine oil.
- Remove lower timing chain cover. Refer to => [ Lower Timing Chain Cover ] Lower Timing Chain Cover.
- Remove camshaft timing chains from camshafts. Refer to => [ Camshaft Timing Chains ] Camshaft Timing Chains.
- Remove power take-off drive chain. Refer to: Vehicles up to 04.2006 => [ Power Take-Off Drive Chain, through 04.06 ] , vehicle from 04.2006 => [ Power Take-Off Drive Chain, from 05.06 ] Power Take-Off Drive Chain, From 05.06.
- Push drive chain tensioner guide rail in direction of - arrow - and secure chain tensioner using securing pin (T40071).
- Mark running direction of timing chain with paint.
- Remove bolts - 2 - and - 3 - and remove chain sprockets with drive chain and glide track - 1 -.
Installing
Installation is in reverse order of removal, noting the following:
• Secure crankshaft - 1 - in TDC position using crankshaft holder (T40069).
- First, install left camshaft timing chain sprocket - 2 -.
- Install guide rail - 1 - with installed drive chain.
- Now install right camshaft timing chain sprocket - 3 -.
- Press drive chain tensioner guide rail in direction of - arrow - and pull securing pin (T40071) out of chain tensioner.
- Install power take-off drive chain. Refer to: Vehicles up to 04.2006 => [ Power Take-Off Drive Chain, through 04.06 ] , vehicle from 04.2006 => [ Power Take-Off Drive Chain, from 05.06 ] Power Take-Off Drive Chain, From 05.06.
- Install camshaft timing chains => [ Installing ] Camshaft Timing Chains.
- Install lower timing chain cover. Refer to => [ Lower Timing Chain Cover ] Lower Timing Chain Cover.
- Install crankshaft seal, timing chain side. Refer to => [ Crankshaft Seal, Timing Chain Side, Replacing ] Crankshaft Seal, Timing Chain Side, Replacing.
- Install oil filter housing. Refer to => [ Oil Filter Housing ] Oil Filter Housing.
- Install left and right timing chain covers. Refer to => [ Left and Right Timing Chain Covers ] Left and Right Timing Chain Covers.
- Install cylinder head cover. Refer to: Left => [ Left Cylinder Head Cover ] Left Cylinder Head Cover, right => [ Right Cylinder Head Cover ] Right Cylinder Head Cover.
- Manual Transmission Install dual mass flywheel. Refer to => [ Dual Mass Flywheel ] Dual Mass Flywheel and clutch pressure plate => Manual Transmission/Transaxle [1][2]Manual Transmission/Transaxle
- Vehicles with multitronic transmission. Install flywheel. Refer to: => [ Flywheel ] Flywheel and damper unit => [ Damper Unit ] Damper Unit.
- Vehicles with automatic transmission install drive plate. Refer to => [ Drive Plate ] Drive Plate.
- Add engine oil and check oil level.
