Pyrotechnic Belt Tensioners, Safety Precautions
Pyrotechnic Belt Tensioners, Safety Precautions
CAUTION:
- Testing, removing, installing and repair work may only be performed by qualified personnel.
- Do not check with test light, voltmeter or ohmmeter under any circumstances.
- You can only check belt tensioners when installed and with vehicle diagnostic, testing and information systems (such as Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051B ) intended for that purpose.
- Before handling belt tensioner units (e.g. disconnecting electrical connector), the person handling it must electrostatically discharge. For example, by briefly touching door striker.
- Voltage must be disconnected during all work on belt tensioners.
- Conventional ignition lock: Observe safety precautions with disconnecting battery.
- Electronic ignition lock (e.g. A6 as of model year 2005; A8 as of model year 2003): To remove belt tensioner unit, battery must be disconnected with the ignition switched on, this deviates from the description "disconnecting and connecting battery".
- Disconnect battery ground (GND) strap, cover negative battery post. No waiting time is required after disconnecting the battery.
- Follow measures after connecting battery.
- When connecting belt tensioner, all mechanical parts including those in three-point seat belt, must be secured correctly.
- Only those carrying this out should be in vehicle interior.
- Belt tensioner components may not be opened nor repaired; always use new parts.
- Belt tensioners that have fallen onto a hard surface or show signs of damage must not be installed in vehicle.
- Belt tensioners that are mechanically damaged (dents, cracks) must always be replaced.
- Belt tensioners must be installed immediately after removing from shipping package.
- Belt tensioner is to be returned to shipping package when work is interrupted.
- Open end of belt tensioner should never be pointed at anyone.
- Wash hands after touching belt tensioners that have deployed.
- Storage and transport must conform to national legislation.
- It is not acceptable to leave belt tensioner unattended.
- Belt tensioner should not be treated with grease, cleaning solutions or other materials.
- Belt tensioners must not be exposed to temperatures over 100 degree, even for a short period of time.
