May 5, 2009.
Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 26 number 09-01 dated January 26, 2009 for reasons listed below.
Affected Vehicles
Condition
REVISION HISTORY
This RVU has been proactively released to prevent the following condition from occurring in the vehicle:
^ The rain sensor may not provide the designed wiping interval.
Please note that the rain sensor is a convenience feature only. Even when the condition is present, the wipers will continue to function when the stalk is manually moved to the normal operation locations.
^ Depending on the starting position of the window, attempting to lower the window with the convenience feature may raise the window. Pinch protection remains operative.
^ The comfort system central control module may continue to draw power when the vehicle is off.
This Required Vehicle Update (RVU) is in effect for 15 months from date of publication. After that date, this RVU will expire and no longer be in effect.
Vehicle must meet all of the following criteria:
^ Procedure is valid only for vehicles that show the CJ / 26E3 code in the ElsaWeb Campaign/Action Information screen on the day of repair.
^ Vehicle must be within the Limited New Vehicle Warranty.
^ Procedure must be performed within the allotted time frame stated in this Technical Service Bulletin.
^ Procedure must be performed on applicable vehicles in Dealer inventory prior to sale.
Technical Background
On Audi A5/S5 vehicles produced within a specific period, a software update must be performed for various control units.
Production Solution
Optimized control module software.
Service
A software update must be performed for various control units. The software updates could contain a combination of the following modules:
^ 09 - Central electric module
^ 42 - Door control module driver side (which includes 52 - Door control module passenger side)
^ 46 - Comfort system central control module
Tip:
Not all vehicles will require all modules to be updated. Please see the list of VINs shown in this bulletin to see which modules can be charged for the appropriate software updates.
Tip:
Please note that the remote diagnosis head VAS 5054/A must always be connected to the VAS 5051 or VAS 5052 tester using the USB cable port (VAS 5054/1), and not with the Wireless Bluetooth interface when performing this software update due to the large amount of data being transferred.
Tip:
The Base 15 CD update adds the "Audi Flashing" option at the main tester screen. Using this function can reduce the time necessary to perform the software update by allowing a quick access to the Software Version Management (SVM) selections.
SVM Update Instructions
1. If you encounter a vehicle with a tuned ECM or TCM, your dealership must do the following before performing any procedure that updates ECM or TCM programming:
Note:
Any Update Programming procedure (flash) may overwrite any tuned ECM or TCM programming. A tuned ECM or TCM is described as any ECM or TCM altered so as to perform outside the normal parameters and specifications approved by Audi of America, Inc.
a. Notify the owner that their ECM or TCM was found to have been tuned.
b. Notify the owner that any damage caused by the tuning of the ECM or TCM (including any adverse emissions consequences) will not be covered by Audi of America, Inc. warranties.
c. Obtain the owner's written consent (see Control Module Tuning form shown above) for any requested repair - under warranty or outside warranty - that requires flashing that will automatically overwrite the tuned program.
2. Prior to beginning the SVM process, insert a USB memory stick into the VAS 505X tester to capture the diagnostic log electronically. In case TAC support is required, attach the diagnostic log to the ticket. The TAC will need this log to assist you.
3. Prior to connecting the VAS 5051/5052, turn the hazard lights on and leave them on throughout the update procedure. This is to prevent the CAN bus from entering sleep mode and interrupting the flash routine.
4. Access Guided Functions and perform a "Problem-related hardware and software update" using the SVM code 26E3A001.
5. SVM will inform the user which modules need to be updated for this action. Please see attached VIN list for appropriate criterion codes that apply to each VIN.
6. Perform appropriate updates via SVM.
7. Check for DTCs created during reflash. Erase if necessary.
8. If the update programming aborts for any reason before full completion, ensure that VAS Base Software Patch CD (Audi Technical Literature item number W42BaseSoftwarePatch) is installed in the VAS 5051/5052. Restart the SVM flash function test from the test plan again. If TAC contact is necessary, attach the diagnostic log to the TAC ticket.
9. It is possible that the software update for the Comfort System Central Control Module may be interrupted. This control unit operates the ignition circuit (terminal 15), therefore the ignition may not turn on, and the key may be held in the ignition switch. Should you encounter this condition, bypass the power supply relay J329 and perform the flash again.
Interrupted Comfort System Central Control Module Flash Instructions
a. Remove the J329 relay and bridge terminals 3 and 5 in the relay holder.
^ Figure 2 shows the relay location in vehicles produced prior to September 2007.
^ Figure 3 shows the relay location in vehicles produced after September 2007.
b. Restart the SVM flash procedure from the test plan again.
c. When prompted to switch off ignition, remove wire bridge from J329 Terminal 15 relay socket. Reinstall the relay.
d. Check for DTCs created during reflash. Erase if necessary.
Tip:
Only the modules mentioned in this bulletin are flashed as part of this RVU. Updates of any other control units cannot be charged under this RVU.
Tip:
The SVM Process must be completed in its entirety so the database receives the update confirmation response. A warranty claim may not be reimbursed if there is no confirmation response to support the claim.
For further SVM update instructions and troubleshooting, please refer to the SVM Operating Manual; ElsaWeb TSB 2011732.
Warranty
Tip:
Not all vehicles will require all modules to be updated. Please see ElsaWeb for the criteria that are applicable for each specific vehicle. These criteria will determine which modules can be charged out for the appropriate software updates.
Tip:
For assistance inputting a SAGA claim for this RVU, please see example SAGA claim located on ServiceNet.
