Backrest Cover and Upholstery
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Upholstery clip pliers (V.A.G 1634)
Removing
CAUTION!
• Observe safety precautions for work on airbags.
• Before handling any airbag units (for example, when disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
- Remove front seat. Refer to => [ Front Seat ] Power Front Memory Seats.
- Attach front seat to Fixture For Seat Repair (VAS 6136). Refer to => [ Front Seat, Installing on Seat Repair Tool ] .
- Open corrugated pipe and remove wires that lead into backrest (for example, side airbag wire, backrest heating wire). Refer to => [ Modular Wire Routing with Corrugated Tube on Front Seat ] Modular wire routing with corrugated tube on front seat.
- Disengage strap - arrow - for cover - 1 - on seat pan upper frame - 2 -.
- Unclip clip - 4 - on belt webbing - 1 -.
- Unclip clip - 3 - on belt webbing - 2 -.
- Remove front backrest. Refer to => [ Front Backrest ] Power Front Memory Seats.
- Fold up lower edge of cover - 1 - in area - arrow A -.
- Disengage bottom of cover - 1 - from slits - arrow C - in backrest cover.
- Unclip cover retaining strip - 1 - from groove running all around - arrow D - the backrest cover - 2 -.
- Use (3409) to unclip.
- Beginning unclipping in area - arrow B - of backrest cover - 2 -.
• The cover retaining strip can only be unclipped from the backrest cover - 5 - groove with relatively great force.

- Remove the seat backrest panel. Refer to => [ Backrest Cover ] Power Front Memory Seats
- Disengage the lower retaining strips - 1 - on the backrest frame - 2 -.
CAUTION!

- Pull cover as far forward as possible in side airbag area in order to be able to remove side airbag.
Vehicles through 04.07:
- Remove the side airbag. Refer to => [ Driver and Passenger Side Airbag Igniter, through 04.2007 ] .
- Remove the airbag from the pocket sewn into the cover and engage the airbag in the backrest frame.
Vehicles from 05.07:
- Remove the side airbag. Refer to => [ Driver and Front Passenger Side Airbag Igniter from 05.2007 ] Driver and Front Passenger Side Airbag Igniter from 05.2007.
- Remove the clamping strip for the side airbag cloth strap from the backrest frame and engage the side airbag again into the backrest frame.
All Vehicles
- Reach from the rear side of the backrest under the upholstery and find the release button - 4 -.
- Press the release button - 4 - in the - direction of the arrow - toward the center of the backrest.
- Hold release button - 4 - down in this position.
- Remove upholstery with headrest - 1 - upward from backrest frame - 3 -.

6 Side Airbag
• A second technician is needed to remove upholstery with headrest from backrest frame.
Installation
Installation is in reverse order of removal, noting the following:
CAUTION!
• Observe safety precautions for work on airbags.
• Before handling any airbag units (for example, when disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
- Make sure the headrest is engaged correctly in headrest guides after positioning upholstery on backrest.
- Make sure the retaining strips engage correctly and the cover is not wrinkled.
• Ensure that electrical connections are pushed in as far as stop and engage with a click.
- Switch on ignition.
CAUTION!
Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.
- Connect battery ground cable with ignition switched on.
- If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (K75) indicates a fault after installation, DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again.
