Refrigerant Lines, Disconnecting and Connecting From Compressor

Refrigerant Circuit

Refrigerant Lines, Disconnecting and Connecting from Compressor

Compressor is always driven when engine is running; there is no magnetic clutch. Engine is therefore not to be started unless refrigerant circuit has been properly assembled. If for example the refrigerant lines are not connected to the compressor and the engine is started then the compressor may be destroyed by the build-up of internal heat.

The following illustrations show a compressor installed on left of engine, refrigerant lines with compressor installed at other locations are to be removed the same way.

Seal open pipes and connections at compressor with suitable caps to prevent ingress of dirt and moisture.

Removing

- Remove upper engine cover, vehicles with 8 cylinder. diesel engine only.

- Drain the refrigerant circuit.

- On vehicles with 8 cylinder. FSI engine, perform the preparatory work described. Refer to => [ Compressor, 8 Cylinder FSI ] Service and Repair

- On vehicles with 10 cylinder engine, perform the preparatory work described. Refer to=> [ Compressor, S8 10 Cylinder ] Service and Repair

- On vehicles with 12 cylinder engine, perform the preparatory work described. Refer to=> [ Compressor from Bracket, 12 Cylinder ] Service and Repair

- Remove compressor from bracket, not for vehicles with 8 cylinder diesel engine. Refer to => [ Compressor, Removing from Bracket, 6 Cylinder, 8 Cylinder MPI and 8
Cylinder Diesel ] Service and Repair

- Remove bolts - A -.

- Disconnect refrigerant lines - B - and - C -.

Installing

Installation is carried out in the reverse order, when doing this note the following:

- Replace O-rings seals - D - and - E -, version.

- Tighten bolts - B - to 25 Nm.

Do not use the O-rings from the shipping caps that are installed on the connections of replacement compressor when installing lines.

Coat O-ring seals lightly with refrigerant oil before installing. Refer to => [ Refrigerant Circuit O-Ring Seals ] Refrigerant Circuit O-Ring Seals.

Following attachment of refrigerant pipes to compressor and installation of compressor check routing of pipes. They must be inserted in holders provided and not make contact with other components.

- Evacuate refrigerant circuit and recharge again.

- Operate the A/C system after filling the refrigerant circuit. Refer to => [ Operating A/C System after Filling Refrigerant Circuit ] Operating A/C System after Filling Refrigerant Circuit

Note the information regarding operating the A/C system after filling.
