Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Airbag adapter (VAS 6280)
• Removing and installing the two-third bench is described in this chapter. Since removing and installing the individual seat in the second row seats in similar, there is no special description for them.
Removing
Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components General Safety Precautions ] .
- Switch the ignition on.
- Disconnect the battery ground cable with the ignition switched on.
Before handling airbag units (for example, when disconnecting the harness connector), the person handling them must discharge static electricity. For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
- Disconnect connectors. Refer to => [ Disconnecting and Connecting Harness Connectors ] Disconnecting and Connecting Harness Connectors.
- Connect (VAS 6235) or (VAS 6280). Refer to => [ Connecting Airbag Adapter ] Connecting Airbag Adapter.
- Unclip wiring cable guide at connector station on seat.
Only on vehicles with a manual seat forward/back adjustment / without entry assist
The stop bolts for the two-third seat bench are shown in the illustration, the entire bench itself is not shown. The location of the stop bolts for the single seat is similar to that of the two-third seat bench.
The bolts - 2 - are a stop for the forward/back adjustment and are installed only on vehicles with manual forward/back adjustment.
- Move the seat bench all the way to the rear.
- Remove the bolts - 2 -.
1 Tunnel-side seat rail
2 Stop bolt
3 Stop
4 Sill-side seat rail
Only in vehicles with a fixed seat bench
- With fixed bench seat, the seat cushion must be removed for access to rear screws. Refer to => [ Bench Seat Cushion ] Bench Seat Cushion.
Procedure for all vehicles
- Remove seat rail cover - 4 -. Refer to => [ Seat Rail Cover ] Seat Rail Cover.
- Remove bolts - 1 - (5x).
- Lift seat - 3 - out of vehicle.
- Create a surface that can be walked on (for example a piece of wood) with dimensions approximately 16 inches x 16 inches (400 mm x 400 mm).
After removing seat, cover this area with a surface that can be walked on (for example a piece of wood).
If a surface that can be walked on is not used, the air ducts beneath the floor covering can be damaged or destroyed when walking on the floor.
Installing
Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components General Safety Precautions ] .
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
- When installing seat, rail offsets must not align with each other (same lock position).
- Clean nut threads before installing new screws.
- Use new screws.
- Pay attention to the assembly sequence and tightening torque. Refer to => [ Assembly Sequence and Tightening Torque ] 2nd Row, 3 Seater Overview.
Before handling airbag units (for example, when disconnecting the harness connector), the person handling them must discharge static electricity. For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
- Remove (VAS 6235) or (VAS 6280) only after installing seat. Refer to => [ Connecting Airbag Adapter ] Connecting Airbag Adapter.
- Connect connector to connector station. Refer to => [ Disconnecting and Connecting Harness Connectors ] Disconnecting and Connecting Harness Connectors.
- Ensure that the airbag connector engages correctly.
• Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure.
- Clip wiring cable release into connector station.
Ignition must be on when connecting battery. If pyrotechnic components (for example, airbag, belt tensioner) are not repaired correctly, they may deploy unintentionally after connecting battery. Maintain personal safety when connecting the battery by staying out of airbag deployment areas, keeping a distance from belt tensioners/seat belts and ensuring no other people are in the vehicle interior at the moment when the battery is connected.
- Switch on ignition.
- Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on.
- If the airbag indicator lamp (K75) indicates a fault after installation, the DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again using the Vehicle diagnostic tester.
Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Assembly Sequence and Tightening Torque ] 2nd Row, 3 Seater Overview and => [ (Item 2) Bolt ] 2nd Row, 3 Seater Overview.
