Backrest Cover and Upholstery

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Upholstery Clip Pliers (V.A.G 1634)

Drill

Protective Eyewear

12 mm Drill Bit

Separating Cover and Padding From Backrest Frame






Removing

Vehicles equipped with a mount for a DVD player

DVD player removed.

- Unclip the trim - 2 - for the connector - arrow -.

Eye injury risk.

Wear protective eyewear!

- Drill out the guides - 1 - and - 3 - for the DVD player using a 12 mm drill.








Danger of destroying the backrest cover and cushion.

The guides are held in the backrest frame by the retaining tabs - arrows -.

When removing, drill out only up to dimension - a - = 35 mm.

Continuation for all






- Remove the backrest. Refer to => [ Front Seat Backrest Assembly Overview ] Front Seat Backrest Assembly Overview.

- Remove the headrest: vehicles without a screen for Rear Seat Entertainment, refer to => [ Headrests with Locking Mechanism ] Headrests With Locking Mechanism, vehicles with a screen for Rear Seat Entertainment, refer to => [ Headrests with a Rear Seat Entertainment Screen ] Headrests With a Rear Seat Entertainment Screen.

- Remove headrest guides. Refer to => [ Headrest Guides ] Headrest Guides.

- Remove backrest cover panel. Refer to => [ Backrest Cover Assembly Overview ] Backrest Cover Assembly Overview.

- Remove lower retaining strips - 3 -.

- Remove side retaining strips - 2 -.

- Pry out upper retaining strip - 1 -.

- Remove side airbag.

- Remove the bolt - 3 -.






- Loosen airbag cable brackets - 4 - on the backrest frame.

- Press airbag - 1 - in - direction of arrow A - upward and disengage airbag from backrest frame. Refer to => [ Drivers Side and Passenger Side Airbag Igniter N199 and N200, Standard Seat, Power Seat ] Drivers Side and Passenger Side Airbag Igniter N199 and N200, Standard Seat, Power Seat.

- Remove airbag - 1 - from pocket - 2 - and re-engage airbag in backrest frame.

- Remove upholstery with cover.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

- Replace the airbag screw, refer to => [ (Item 4) Bolt ] Backrest Cover and Padding.

Vehicles equipped with a mount for a DVD player






The guide mounts - 1 - and - 3 - on the backrest must free of contaminants.

- Align the backrest cover and install the guides into the mounts.

The guides - 1 - and - 3 - can be installed in only one position.

The release buttons must face outside.

- Install the trim - 2 -.

The trim can be installed in only one position.

Ignore the - arrow -.

Separating Cover From Padding

Version B

Removing

Version A upholstery clips, refer to => [ (Item 3) Upholstery Clips ].






- Cut the upholstery clips - 2 -.

- Remove the cover - 1 - from cushion - 3 -.

Version B clip, refer to => [ (Item 4) Clip ].






- Pry cover wire - 3 - out with a screwdriver from behind - direction of arrow A - out of clip - 2 -.

- Do the same with all other clips.

- Remove the cover - 1 - from cushion - 4 -.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

- When installing new upholstery clips, use (V.A.G 1634).
