Refrigerant Lines, Disconnecting and Connecting From Compressor
Refrigerant Lines, Disconnecting and Connecting from Compressor
• Compressor is always driven when engine is running; there is no magnetic clutch. Engine is therefore not to be started unless refrigerant circuit has been properly assembled. If for example the refrigerant lines are not connected to the compressor and the engine is started then the compressor may be destroyed by the build-up of internal heat.
• The following figures show a compressor installed on the right side of the engine. The refrigerant lines are to be removed in the same way for compressors installed on the left side of the engine. However, a bracket is currently not installed for the refrigerant lines in these engines.
• Seal open pipes and connections at compressor with suitable caps (to prevent ingress of dirt and moisture).
• In vehicles with an 8 cylinder engine, various preliminary steps are necessary to make the refrigerant lines accessible for removal. Refer to => [ Compressor, 4- or 6-Cylinder ] .
Removing
- Discharge refrigerant circuit.
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Remove the front bumper (not always necessary, depending on the vehicle).
- Bring the lock carrier into service position. Refer to => Radiator Support Radiator Support
- Remove the charge air cooler or the secondary air pump motor (not always necessary, depending on the vehicle).
- Remove screw - A - (currently only in compressors installed on the right side of the engine).
- Remove bolts - B -.
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order, when doing this note the following:
- Check the type of seal at the connections and the refrigerant lines. These must be designed for the same type of seal. Refer to => [ Refrigerant Line to Component Connections ] Refrigerant Circuit, Servicing .
- Replace O-rings seals - D - and - E -, version.
- Tighten screws - B - with 10 Nm (screws with an M6 thread) and to 25 Nm (screws with an M8 thread).
- Tighten screw - A - with 10 Nm (screws with an M6 thread) and to 25 Nm (screws with an M8 thread).
• First tighten screws - B - and then secure clamp - C - with screw - A -.
• Do not use the O-rings from the shipping caps that are installed on the connections of replacement compressor when installing lines.
• Following attachment of refrigerant lines - A -, check the routing of the lines. They must be inserted in the provided holders - B - and may not come into contact with other components.
