Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting

Battery

The battery is one of the most important electrical components in the vehicle. Its proper functioning is a major factor in ensuring customer satisfaction. To guarantee a long service life, the battery must be checked, serviced and maintained as described in this service information.

In addition to its function of starting the vehicle, the battery performs other tasks as a buffer and a source of electrical energy for the vehicle's entire electrical system.

Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting

Procedure

See Caution before beginning repairs on the electrical system => [ Battery ] Battery

- Note and if necessary, determine radio code for vehicles equipped with coded anti-theft radio / radio navigation system only foreign brands).

- Switch ignition off.

- Slide cover over the battery to the right - arrow 1 - and pull it off upwards - arrow 2 -.

- Disconnect Ground (GND) strap at battery - arrow -.

- To connect, connect terminal clamp of Ground (GND) cable by hand to battery negative post"-" and tighten nut.

Be sure to activate vehicle features (radio/radio-navigation system, clock, electric window regulators) according to owner's manual when the battery is reconnected.

Deactivate service mode of Telematic Control Module. Guided Fault Finding; Adaptation; Telephone/Telematics

Further measures after reconnecting power supply

After reconnecting voltage supply, ABS Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) only goes out after driving several meters.

Battery, Removing and Installing

Removing

See Caution before beginning repairs on the electrical system => [ Battery ] Battery

- Switch ignition off.

- Remove rubber seal from plenum chamber cover.

- Remove plenum chamber cover - 1 - from the front - arrows -.

- Disconnect Ground (GND) strap - 1 - on battery negative terminal and disconnect positive cable - 2 - at battery positive terminal.

- Loosen bolt - 4 - using a ball head hex socket wrench only until socket-head rubs against suspension cross-brace.

- Leave socket-head bolt and securing bracket - 3 - in place, and swivel out battery from under securing bracket.

- Disconnect angle piece of central gas venting system - arrow -.

- Lift battery out of plenum chamber.

Installing

Batteries from the Audi Parts Program have a bottom strip-adapter for adapting to different grip channels. Whether and how bottom strip adapter is used, refer to operating instructions for battery.

- Insert battery into battery holder so that tab of rear battery holder - arrow - engages into cutout for battery clamping strip - 1 -.

Battery must no longer be shifted.

- Battery is properly inserted when center cutout of battery clamping strip aligns with threaded hole in battery holder - arrows -.

Installation is reverse of removal, paying attention to the following:

- Observe notes for central venting of battery.

With ignition switched off and electrical consumers switched off, connect battery in the following sequence:

- Connect terminal clamp of positive cable on battery positive terminal " +" by hand and tighten nut - 2 -.

- Connect terminal clamp of Ground (GND) wire to battery negative terminal "-" by hand and tighten nut - 1 -.

- Check battery for proper seating after installation.

When reconnecting the battery, remember to activate vehicle equipment (radio/radio navigation system, clock, electric window, ) in accordance with owner's manual.

Deactivate service mode of Telematic Control Module. Guided Fault Finding; Adaptation; Telephone/Telematics

After reconnecting voltage supply, ABS Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) only goes out after driving several meters.

Battery Central Gas Venting

CAUTION!
New style batteries with central gas venting must be installed.

Always use original battery sealing plugs. The plugs must be installed with an O-ring seal.

There are two types of batteries with a central gas venting:

Batteries with a hose or connection for central gas venting

Batteries without a hose or connection for central gas venting

The latest generation of batteries are equipped with a central gas venting system and a fine mesh flame trap. Function: Gas produced during charging escape through a central opening on the top part of the battery cover. The flame trap which prevents flammable gases in the battery from igniting is also located at this point..The flame trap consists of a small round fiberglass mat about 15 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick. It works similarly to a valve, i.e. it allows gas produced in the battery to vent.

Do not grease battery terminals.

To avoid damaging the battery housing, put the battery clamps on only by hand, without forcing them.

Notes on operation of central gas venting system:

For batteries with hose/line for central gas venting system, make sure the hose is not kinked, otherwise the battery will not be properly vented.

On batteries with no central gas venting hose/line, it is important to ensure that opening in top cover - arrow - is not clogged.

Battery Secure Seating, Checking

If battery is not securely seated, the following dangers exist:

Shortened service life caused by vibration damage.

The cells in battery will be damaged if battery is not secured correctly.

Damage to battery housing by clamping bracket (possible acid leakage, high subsequent costs).

Poor crash safety.

Make sure that battery does not leak, only install genuine battery caps.

Use genuine sealing plugs of same construction if lost or damaged.

The sealing plugs must be provided with an O-ring.
