Front Backrest, Removing and Installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Torque wrench V.A.G 1331
- Engine and transmission holder VAS 6095
- Fixture for seat repair VAS 6136

Removal
CAUTION:
- Observe safety precautions for work on airbags.
- Before handling airbag units (e.g. disconnecting electrical connector), the person handling it must "electrostatically discharge". This can be done by touching door striker, for example.
- Remove seat.
- Mount the fixture for seat repair VAS 6136 on the engine and transmission holder VAS 6095.
- Attach the front seat to the fixture for seat repair VAS 6136.
- Remove side trim on sill side.
- Remove side trim on tunnel side.
- Disengage retaining strip - 1 - from seat pan - 10 -.
Vehicles without modular wiring routing through 08.05
- Disconnect connectors and disconnect cables from spring mat.
Vehicles with modular wiring routing from 07.06
- Vehicles with modular wiring routing have a continuous wire from side airbag to connector station.
- Disconnect side airbag connector at connector station.
- Remove corrugated tubing.
Procedure for all vehicles
- Remove screw - 8 -.
- Turn bracket - 9 - upward.
- Remove screws - 5 - (4x).
- Tip backrest - 1 - forward on seat.
- Push cushion aside and carefully disconnect wiring harness - 3 - from seat pan - 10 -.
- Remove backrest - 2 -.
Installing
Installation is reverse of removal. When doing so, note the following:
- Cut threads in backrest frame before installing screws - 5 - (4x).
- Always replace bolts - 5 - (4x).
- Secure tabs - 7 - on footwell cover to spring mat of seat pan.
- For seats with seat memory: Perform a basic setting for backrest or seat after installing seat in vehicle.

- Threaded holes for screws must always be cleaned (for example, with thread cutter)

- Only on vehicles without modular wiring routing through 08.05
- Press in catches on connectors - 4 -, - 5 - and - 6 - on left and right and disconnect connectors.
- Disconnect harness connector of side airbag - 1 -.
- Disconnect clip - 2 -.
- Loosen wires at cable tie clips - 3 -.
