Battery

Removing

CAUTION!
For vehicles with Telematics, activate service mode of Telematics control module before disconnecting the battery.

- On vehicles with coded radio control module/radio navigation system (only other manufacturers), note code, obtain if necessary.

- Switch off ignition.

- Remove plenum chamber cover rubber seal in - direction of arrow -.





- Remove plenum chamber cover - 1 - forward.

- Connect the battery charger for battery assistance mode. Refer to => [ Battery, Preparing for Support Mode ] Battery, Preparing for Support Mode.

- Loosen nut several turns and remove ground wire terminal clamp - 1 - from battery terminal.





- Loosen nut several turns and remove ground wire terminal clamp - 2 - from battery positive terminal.

- Remove the bolt - 4 - with a ball head hex socket wrench just far enough until the ball head rubs against the strut tower.

- Let hex bolt and securing bracket - 3 - remain installed and swing out battery under securing bracket.

- Remove the central venting hose - arrow -.





- Remove battery from plenum chamber.

CAUTION!
Pollution risk.

Battery and sulfuric acid disposal regulations must be followed when disposing of batteries.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:

Only maintenance-free batteries conforming to standards "TL82506 " (as of December 1997) and "VW75073" (as of August 2001) may be installed.

Batteries from the Audi Parts Program have a bottom strip-adapter for adapting to different grip channels. Whether and how bottom strip-adapter is used, refer to operating instructions for battery.

- Insert battery into battery holder so that tab of rear battery holder - arrow - engages into cutout for battery clamping strip - 1 -.





It should no longer be possible to move the battery.

- Battery is properly inserted when center notch of battery base reinforcement aligns with threaded hole in battery carrier - arrows -.





- Tighten battery bracket - 3 - using hex socket head screw - 4 -.





Lug at battery bracket must engage in recess at battery base strip.

With ignition switched off and electrical consumers switched off, connect battery in the following sequence:

- Connect positive cable terminal clamp - 2 - by hand to battery positive terminal "+" and tighten nut.

- Connect pole shoe - 1 - of ground cable by hand to battery negative terminal "-" and tighten nut.

- Connect central venting system hose while observing notes.

- Check battery after installation for secure seating.

- Stop battery assistance mode at battery charger.

If the battery was not removed and installed in assistance mode, the following steps must be performed after reconnecting the battery:

Activate the radio/radio navigation, clock, power windows. Refer to the Owner's Manual.

Deactivate the service mode on the Telematics control module.

Check radio remote control for function, synchronize radio key if necessary. Inform customer that second key and any additional keys must be synchronized so that the remote control functions properly. Refer to the Owner's Manual.

Check DTC memories of all control modules and erase "Undervoltage " DTC if necessary. Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 505.

After re-connecting voltage supply, ESP Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) only goes out after driving several meters.
