Shock Absorber







Shock Absorber

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1332)

Engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A)

Wheel hub support (T10149)

Removing






- Determine dimension - a - from the center of the wheel to the lower edge of the wheel housing before starting work while the vehicle is resting on its wheels.

- Place the vehicle on a hoist.

- Remove the wheel.

- Remove wheel housing liner.

Applies to Vehicles with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC)






- Bleed the DRC (Dynamic Ride Control) system. Refer to => [ Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), Draining and Filling ] Procedures.

- If the vehicle has DRC and variable damping, disconnect the connector on the additional component with an integrated electric motor.

- Remove the union nut - 4 - and free up the hose line.

Protect any open connections against dirt.

- Turn the wheel hub up until a wheel bold hole is on top.

- Install the (T10149) with the wheel bolt - arrow -






- Insert the (T10149) in the (V.A.G 1383 A) and lift the wheel bearing housing slightly.

- Remove bolts - 1 -.

Applies to a Vehicle with Electronically Controlled Damping






- Release and remove the connector - 2 -.

- Remove the fastener - 1 -.

Continuation for All Vehicles






- Release the retaining tabs - A - and remove the stone deflector - 2 -.

- Remove the bolt - 2 - and washer - 1 -.






- Remove the shock absorber downward.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Wheel Bearing Housing, Wheel Bearing Unit and Coil Spring Shock Absorber Overview, AWD ] Wheel Bearing Housing, Wheel Bearing Unit and Coil Spring Shock Absorber Overview, AWD.

Tightening specifications: Union nut to the hose line on the DRC (Dynamic Ride Control) shock absorber. Refer to => [ Rear Shock Absorber ] Service and Repair.

Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent. Only tighten suspension bolts when vehicle is in curb weight or control position.

Wheel bearing, lifting to curb weight position on vehicles with coil springs, refer to => [ Wheel Bearing with Coil Spring, Lifting to Curb Weight Position ] Rear Suspension.

- Fill the DRC system. Refer to => [ Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), Draining and Filling ] Procedures.

- Install wheel housing liner.

- Tighten wheel.
