Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 30 number 10 - 03 dated September 1, 2010 for reasons listed below.
AFFECTED VEHICLE
CONDITION
Customer statement:
^ The engine does not start, despite pressing clutch pedal.
^ The driver information system permanently shows the message "To start engine press clutch".
Workshop finding 1: No irregularities on the clutch mechanism or the clutch hydraulics, but start not possible.
Workshop finding 2: When pressing the clutch pedal, an additional pressure point can be felt just before full stop. In this position a start is not possible. The pedal can be pressed about 1cm past this pressure point. The interlock switch in the clutch master cylinder only then authorizes the start.
TECHNICAL BACKGROUND
Workshop finding 1: Because of a malfunction of the interlock switch in the clutch master cylinder, the start is not authorized.
Workshop finding 2: Because the release bearing is worn or the release bearing presses against the release lever (Figures 1 and 2), the mechanical ratio of the clutch mechanism increases. This causes hydraulic ratio to increase too much, which leads to the additional pressure point.
PRODUCTION SOLUTION

SERVICE
Workshop finding 1
Check the interlock switch in the clutch master cylinder.
If the interlock switch is incorrect, replace the clutch master cylinder.
Tip: The clutch interlock switch is calibrated to the clutch master cylinder and therefore cannot be replaced individually.
Workshop finding 2
1. Check whether there is an additional pressure point in the clutch pedal travel.
2. If this is the case, check the components of the mechanical and hydraulic clutch mechanism for wear/damage.
3. Replace any worn/damaged components.
Tip: If the release bearing or the release lever has the above wear marks, replace both parts. Make sure to also replace the guide sleeve for the release bearing whenever the release bearing is replaced.
Note:
Do not mix shift forks/pivot points. Part number 0B1 141 719 H lever should only be used with ball pin 0B1 141 777 A. Part number 0B1 141 719 J lever should only be used with ball pin 0B1 141 777 B. See Additional Information notes below.
4. Reference the repair manual instructions as the following parts require special lubrication (Figure 3).
a. If any original parts are being reused, make sure to remove the old lubricant from the points shown in Figure 3.
b. Lubricate the bearing surface of the pivot point (arrow A) with lubricant G 000100.
c. Lubricate the points B, C and D using only solid lubricant G 000 150.
