Front Seat Angle Adjustment Motors
Removing
CAUTION!
• Observe safety precautions for work on airbags.
• Before handling any airbag units (for example, when disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
- Remove the seat.
- Attach front seat to (VAS 6136). Refer to => [ Front Seat, Installing on Seat Repair Tool ] Front Seat, Installing on Seat Repair Tool.
- Remove bolts - 2 - (quantity: 4).
- Remove the bolt - 3 -.
- Remove connector - 4 -.
- Remove Driver Seat Inclination Adjustment Motor (V243) or (V244) - 1 -.
Installation
Installation is in reverse order of removal, noting the following:
CAUTION!

• Before handling any airbag units (for example, when disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
- Replace bolt - 3 - after each removal.
- Threaded screw holes - 3 - must always be cleaned (for example, with thread cutter)
• Ensure that electrical connections are pushed in as far as stop and engage with a click.
- Switch on ignition.
CAUTION!
Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.
- Connect battery ground cable with ignition switched on.
- If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (K75) indicates a fault after installation, DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again.

Seat Forward/Back Adjustment Motor
• If motor is faulty, lower seat pan frame must be replaced.
• Seat is shown without upholstery and without backrest in picture for the sake of a better illustration.
Removing

- Remove the seat.
- Attach front seat to (VAS 6136). Refer to => [ Front Seat, Installing on Seat Repair Tool ] Front Seat, Installing on Seat Repair Tool.
- Separate seat pan upper frame from lower frame. Refer to => [ Lower Seat Frame ].
• The inclination adjustment motor and height adjustment motor must be installed in the new seat pan lower frame.
- Remove Driver Seat Inclination Adjustment Motor (V243) or (V244) - 1 -. Refer to => [ Front Seat Angle Adjustment Motors ].
- Remove Driver Seat Height Adjustment Motor (V245) or (V246)- 3 - => [ Driver and Front Passenger Height Adjustment Motors ].

4 Seat pan lower frame
Installation
Installation is in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

- Install Driver Seat Height Adjustment Motor (V245) or (V246) - 3 - in new seat pan lower frame - 4 -. Refer to => [ Driver and Front Passenger Height Adjustment Motors ].
- Install Driver Seat Inclination Adjustment Motor (V243) or (V244) - 1 - in new seat pan lower frame - 4 -. Refer to => [ Front Seat Angle Adjustment Motors ].
• Ensure that electrical connections are pushed in as far as stop and engage with a click.
- Switch on ignition.
CAUTION!
Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.
- Connect battery ground cable with ignition switched on.
- If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (K75) indicates a fault after installation, DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again.
Front Seat Backrest Adjustment Motors
Removing
CAUTION!
Observe safety precautions for work on airbags.
- Remove the seat.
- Attach front seat to (VAS 6136). Refer to => [ Front Seat, Installing on Seat Repair Tool ] Front Seat, Installing on Seat Repair Tool.
- Remove the sill side trim and assembly cover.
- Remove the tunnel side trim.
- Remove backrest cover panel.
- Disconnect connector - 5 - at backrest adjustment motor - 1 -.
- Pull cover - 3 - and anti-crush fleece - 2 - aside.
- Remove the bolt - 4 -.
- On backrest motor side, pry out spring washer - 1 - with a screwdriver.
- Tap shaft - 2 - through the side of the backrest frame using a hammer and drift punch.
- Remove shaft - 2 - from backrest frame far enough so fore and aft adjustment motor can be removed.
Installation
CAUTION!
Observe safety precautions for work on airbags.
- Using a screwdriver, turn the locking pin of splines - 1 - so it aligns with shaft of backrest frame.
- Slide shaft through backrest adjustment motor and backrest frame.
- Place a wood block - 1 - under shaft on side opposite of backrest adjustment motor.
- Drive spring washer - 2 - onto shaft - 3 - using a socket insert (11 mm) - 1 -.
- Install bolt on backrest adjustment motor and tighten to specified tightening specification.
- Connect connector to backrest adjustment motor.
Installation is in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

Removing

- Remove backrest cover panel.
- Remove cover with upholstery. Refer to => [ Backrest Cover and Upholstery ] Backrest Cover and Upholstery.
- Remove the side airbag: vehicle through 04.07, refer to => [ Driver and Passenger Side Airbag Igniter, through 04.2007 ] , vehicles from 05.07, refer to => [ Driver and Front Passenger Side Airbag Igniter from 05.2007 ] Driver and Front Passenger Side Airbag Igniter from 05.2007.
- Disconnect the connector - 3 -.
- Disengage release - 3 - on retaining plate - 2 -.
- Open cable tie - 1 -.
- Disengage the release cable - 3 - from the bracket - 4 -.
- Drill out rivets - 4 - (quantity: 2).
1 Backrest frame
- Remove Driver Seat Lumbar Support Curvature Adjustment Motor (V125) - 2 - or Front Passenger's Seat Lumbar Support Curvature Adjustment Motor (V126).
Installation
Installation is in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

- Rivet the driver seat lumbar support curvature adjustment motor (V125) or front passenger seat lumbar support curvature adjustment motor (V126) with the backrest frame - 1 - using special pop rivet pliers (V.A.G 1753A).
• Ensure that electrical connections are pushed in as far as stop and engage with a click.
- Switch on ignition.

- Connect battery ground cable with ignition switched on.

- Disengage release - 2 - from clip - 1 -.
- Disengage release - 2 - from four-way lumbar support - 3 -.
- Drill out rivets - 4 - (quantity: 2).
2 Backrest frame
- Remove Driver Seat Lumbar Support Height Adjustment Motor (V129) - 1 - or Front passenger Seat Lumbar Support Height Adjustment Motor (V130).
Installation
Installation is in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

- Rivet the driver seat lumbar support height adjustment motor (V129) or front passenger seat lumbar support height adjustment motor (V130) with the backrest frame - 2 - using (V.A.G 1753A).
• Ensure that electrical connections are pushed in as far as stop and engage with a click.
- Switch on ignition.

Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.
- Connect battery ground cable with ignition switched on.

Driver and Front Passenger Height Adjustment Motors
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine and transmission holder (VAS 6095)
• Fixture for seat repair (VAS 6136)
Removing
CAUTION!
Observe safety precautions for work on airbags.
- Remove front seat.
- Disconnect the electrical connector on the seat fore/aft adjustment motor.
- Remove the screw - 1 -; to do this, connect the contacts on the motor with a battery using the cables from the (V.A.G 1594C) and bring the seat adjustment into position.
- Remove the mount - 2 - for the belt latch - 3 - and disconnect the seat belt fastening sensor connector.
- Mount the (VAS 6136) on the (VAS 6095).
- Attach the seat to the (VAS 6136).
- Remove sill side trim and assembly cover.
- Remove tunnel side trim panel.
- Create photos or sketches of wire securing and routing.
- Remove the front backrest.
• If the front backrest is not removed, the load on the seat frame will cause the "ceramic sleeves" to break.
- Remove the bolt - 1 -.
- Remove the nut - 4 - and then remove the screw - 3 -.
- Fold the seat pan - 2 - up - arrow - and secure it with a wooden block so it does not fold back down.
• The bushings - 1 - in the bearings on the lower seat pan frame - 2 - must not be damaged with folding the frame upward.
- Disconnect electrical harness connector - 2 -.
- Remove the screws - arrows - and remove the height adjustment motor - 1 -.
Installation
CAUTION!
Observe safety precautions for work on airbags.
Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following:
CAUTION!
• Damaged bushings - 1 - cannot be replaced with workshop materials.
• If the bushings get damaged, the lower seat pan frame - 2 - must be replaced.
- Clean the threaded bolt holes for self-locking nuts, for example using a thread tap.
- Replace all self-locking bolts.
CAUTION!
Before handling any airbag units (for example, when disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
- Make sure the clip - A - and plastic toothed segment collar - 2 - as well as locking pins - B arrows - are inserted correctly in holes on fitting - 1 -.
- Make sure the plastic toothed segment - 2 - is clipped to fitting - 1 - correctly.
Plastic toothed segment collar - arrow C - must contact fitting - 1 - evenly.
- Route and secure wiring according to photos or sketches that were made.
- Ensure all connectors are engaged correctly.
• Ensure that electrical connections are pushed in as far as stop and engage with a click.
• Ensure wires are not pinched.
CAUTION!
Ignition must be on when connecting battery. If pyrotechnic components (for example, airbag, belt tensioner) are not repaired correctly, they may deploy unintentionally after connecting battery. Maintain personal safety when connecting the battery by staying out of airbag deployment areas, keeping a distance from belt tensioners/seat belts and ensuring no other people are in the vehicle interior at the moment when the battery is connected.
- Switch on ignition.
- Connect battery with ignition on.
- If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (K75) indicates a fault after installation, DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again.
- With memory seats, perform a basic setting for the backrest or seat after installing the seat in the vehicle.

Seat Height Adjuster Toothed Segment

• Trim removal wedge (3409)
Removing

- Remove Driver Seat Height Adjustment Motor (V245) or Front Passenger's Seat Height Adjustment Motor (V246). Refer to => [ Driver and Front Passenger Height Adjustment Motors ].
- Using (3409), unclip plastic toothed segment - 2 - from fitting - 1 -.
Installation
- Clip plastic toothed segment - 2 - into fitting - 1 -.
- Make sure the clip - A - and plastic toothed segment collar - 2 - as well as locking pins - B arrows - are inserted correctly in holes on fitting - 1 -.
- Make sure the plastic toothed segment - 2 - is clipped to fitting - 1 - correctly.
Plastic toothed segment collar - arrow C - must contact fitting - 1 - evenly.
- Make sure the locking pins - A arrows - are inserted correctly in holes - B arrows - on link plate - 1 -.
Installation is in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

- Remove bolts - 2 - (quantity: 2).
- Remove Driver Seat Lumbar Support Adjustment Switch (E176) - 4 - or Front Passenger's Seat Lumbar Support Adjustment Switch (E177) from sill side trim - 1 -.
Installation
To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order.

Seat Adjustment Buttons
Removing
- Remove sill side trim - 3 -.
- Disconnect connectors - 6 - and - 7 -.
- Remove seat and backrest adjustment actuators - 4 - and - 5 -.
- Remove bolts - 1 - (quantity: 3).
- Remove seat fore and aft, inclination, height and backrest adjustment button - 2 -.
Installation
To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order.

Memory Seat/Steering Column Adjustment Control Module or Passenger Memory Seat Control Module
• The Memory Seat/Steering Column Adjustment Control Module (J136) or (J521) is located under the front seat.
• If Memory Seat/Steering Column Adjustment Control Module (J136) or (J521) is faulty, the upper seat pan frame must be removed.
Removing
CAUTION!

- Remove front seat.
- Attach front seat to (VAS 6136). Refer to => [ Front Seat, Installing on Seat Repair Tool ] Front Seat, Installing on Seat Repair Tool.
- Remove bolts - 2 - (quantity: 2).
- Rotate memory seat/steering column adjustment control module - 1 -.
- Release retaining bracket - 4 - and remove connector - 5 -.
- Press retainer tabs - 3 - (quantity: 2) and remove connector - 2 -.
- Remove the bolts - 2 -.
- Remove Memory Seat/Steering Column Adjustment Control Module (J136) or (J521) - 3 - from bracket - 1 -.
