Subframe with Attachments

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench 40-200 Nm (V.A.G 1332)

Engine-/Gearbox Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) with Universal Transmission Support (V.A.G 1359/2)

Tensioning Strap (T10038)

Removing the Subframe and Attachments

- Remove wheels.

Affects Roadster Vehicles






- Remove bolts - 1 - through - 4 - and remove diagonal braces.

Applies to All Vehicles

- Remove the stone chip protection from the trailing arm. Refer to => [ Stone Guard ] Stone Guard.

- Remove the coil springs. Refer to => [ Coil Spring ] Coil Spring.

- Remove the rear muffler.

- Disconnect electrical wires from ABS speed sensor and, on vehicles with level control system sensor, connectors and unclip.

- Remove the bolt - 2 - and washer - 1 -.






- Push the brake lever - 2 - in direction of arrow and disengage the parking brake cable - 3 -.






- Squeeze the tabs - 1 - and remove the parking brake cable.

- Remove the bolt - 1 - and then remove the parking brake cable - 2 - from the bracket.






- Remove the brake caliper.

- Secure the brake caliper to the body so that the weight of the caliper does not stress or damage the brake hose or brake line.

- Remove the bolt - 1 - and then the cowl panel - 2 -






- Mark the installation position of the mounting bracket on the body.






- Remove the bolts - arrows -.

Before -LOOSENING- subframe screws, secure vehicle against tipping over (e.g. load luggage compartment with approximately 50 kg).

- Place (V.A.G 1383 A) with (V.A.G 1359/2) and a suitable wood block under the subframe.






- Secure subframe with tensioning straps.

- Remove the bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.






Only the left side of the vehicle is shown in the illustration.

- Carefully lower subframe with components.

When lowering, make sure there is enough clearance between the brake lines, electric wires and centering pins to drive axle.

Installing the Subframe With its Attachments

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following when doing so:

- The center of the subframe holes must be aligned to the bolting points on the body.

- Always install the bolt - 2 - with a washer - 1 -.






- If the vehicle has automatic head lamp range control, then perform a basic setting on the headlamps.

- If the vehicle has electronic damping (Audi Magnetic Ride), then program the control position. Refer to vehicle diagnostic tester.

- An axle alignment is necessary. Refer to the table => [ An Axle Alignment is Necessary When: ] An Axle Alignment is Necessary When:

Checking and aligning front/rear axle must take place on a VW/Audi recommended alignment stand.
