Battery, Preparing for Charging
Procedure
Risk of explosion on discharged battery with visual indicator.
• If the visual indicator has no color or is light yellow, the battery may not be tested or charged. Jump starting must not be used! There is a risk of explosion during testing, charging or jump starting. The battery must be replaced.
Before the battery charger can be connected, the following preparations are necessary:
• It is recommended that the battery be charged with terminal clamps disconnected.
• It is recommended to charge the battery when it is still connected on vehicles with a battery monitoring control module (J367). This is the only way to ensure the charging current is incorporated into the capacity calculation for the battery monitoring control module.
- Switch off ignition, switch off all electrical consumers and remove ignition key.
Battery in Engine Compartment
- Remove battery cover - 1 - by pressing release button - arrow -.
Vehicles without battery monitoring control module
- Loosen nut - 3 - a few turns and remove ground cable terminal clamp from battery terminal.
- Loosen nut - 2 - a few turns and remove positive cable terminal clamp from battery terminal.
• Disregard item - 1 -.
Continuation for all
- Connect the red cable clamp + - 5 - from the battery charger - 1 - to the positive terminal - 4 - and the black cable clamp - - item 2 - to the ground terminal - 3 -.
Battery in luggage compartment
- Release retaining clamps - arrow - in engine compartment and open cover - 3 - over positive terminal grip.
- Connect battery charger red charging clamp + - item 1 - to positive terminal grip - 2 - and black charging clamp - - item 4 - to negative terminal grip - 5 -.
Continuation for all
- Connect battery charger electrical system connector and switch charger on.
- Keep the hood or rear lid open while charging.
