Service
1. Before repair it is important that the vehicle and any replacement parts be at room temperature (approximately 20°C or 68°F). Bring the vehicle into the workshop to warm if necessary.
2. Even if only one side is detached, make certain to repair both moldings. Inspect for any consequential damage. If any damage is found, this is to be repaired at the time this repair is performed. If the roof channel moldings are undamaged, they will be reused.
3. With the liftgate open, use a plastic hobby tool to carefully detach the molding from the clips by starting from the rear of the molding. Detach just the first clip on each side.
4. Close the liftgate.
5. Complete the removal of the roof moldings by detaching the remaining clips.
6. The original number, type and position of each clip installed may vary. The diagram shows the correct type, position and quantity of each clip.
The rearmost clip that will be installed (8P4 853 573C) will have a hole to accommodate the rivet.
With the molding removed, check for clips that may be loose, of incorrect type, in an incorrect position, or damaged.
7. Remove any loose or incorrect clips and clean away the residual adhesive pad.
8. Mark the location where a 4 mm hole will be drilled into the flange of the rear cover panel. It will be located 35 mm from the rear edge of the flange.
9. Position a 8P4 853 573C clip, centering the mark with the centerline of the hole. Move the clip into its installed position laterally. Mark this position with a punch.
10. Prepare a 4 mm drill bit and mark the bit in a way that allows the bit to penetrate no more than 9 mm.
Note:
The bit must not contact the roof panel beneath the rear cover panel. This will damage the corrosion protection in the roof panel. Drill the hole through only the panel flange.
11. Carefully drill a hole for the rivet.
12. Deburr the hole. Make certain all of the shavings are completely removed from the area.
13. Treat the bare metal surfaces with primer ALN 002 003 10. Allow primer to thoroughly dry.
14. Bond the clip. Make certain holes align. Apply a small amount of window bonder DH 009 100 A2 inside the hole. Rivet the clip using rivet WHT 004 964.
15. Apply cavity wax D 308 SP5 A1 to the top and bottom of the rivet.
16. Prepare the surfaces where new clips may need to be installed by removing the residual tape and cleaning with D 009 401 04 cleaning solution.
17. After the surfaces are cleaned, wipe the contact surface inside the channel with 3M(R) Automotive Adhesion Promoter (product number 06396).
18. Replace the clips as necessary according to Figure 5.
19. Reinstall the moldings.
20. Check the rubber seals on each side of the moldings, ensuring they are correctly seated. Allow vehicle to remain indoors at the room temperature specified for an additional 30 minutes.
