Drive Axle with Peened Triple Roller Joint AAR 3300 i

Disassembling
- Clamp the drive axle horizontally in a vise.
• Use protective vise covers.
• Make sure that the drive axle is not damaged.
- Mark the location of the joint piece to the axle shaft
If they are not marked and are not reinstalled in their previously installed positions, noises may occur later during driving operation.
A water proof felt pen is well suited for applying the mark.
- Open the clamps - arrows -.
- Slide back the Constant Velocity (CV) joint boot.
- Guide the (T40018) behind the joint piece.
The guide pins - 1 - must contact joint.
- Bring the (T40018) into contact with the joint piece by turning the knurled thumb screws - 2 -.
• Secure the joint piece without play in the (T40018).
• Tighten the knurled thumb screws - 2 - by hand only.
- Install the (VW 771) to the (T40018).
- Remove the joint piece horizontally using the (VW 771).
Leave the joint piece in the (T40018).
- Mark the installed position of the parts - 1 and 2 - with lines.
If they are not marked and are not reinstalled in their previously installed positions, noises may occur later during driving operation.
A water proof felt pen is well suited for applying the mark.
1 Axle shaft
2 Triple roller star
- Remove the grease from the triple roller star and the joint piece using a lint free cloth.
- Remove the securing ring.
1 Circlip pliers (commercially available)
- Press the triple roller star off of the axle shaft
(T10065/4) must not be applied to roller body.
- Remove the CV joint boot.
- Remove the grease on the axle shaft splines and from the CV joint boot.
- Check the roller body and ball cage for wear.
- Clean the axle shaft and joint piece.
Assembling
- Slide the new CV joint boot onto the axle shaft.
- Press the circlip - 1 - on as far as the center of the splines.
- Use the special tool shown in the illustration.
Instead of (T10065/2) conical axle shafts, cylindrical axle shafts (T10065/3) are used.
Triple Roller Star, Pressing Onto the Axle Shaft
- Before installing the triple roller star, the splines - A - must be lightly coated with grease used in the joint piece.
- Place the triple roller star on the axle shaft according to the mark and drive on until impact.
This illustration only applies to conical axle shafts - arrow -.
The chamfer on the triple roller star faces toward the axle shaft, this is used as an assembly aid.
- Use the special tool shown in the illustration.
The (T10065/2) must not come in contact with the roller body.
- Place the triple roller star on the axle shaft according to the mark and drive on until impact.
- Circlip must engage audibly, the triple roller star must lie against the circlip with no gap.
This depiction is only valid for axle shafts with a cylindrical shape at the end - arrow -!

- Install the circlip.
1 Circlip pliers (commercially available)
- Press 70 grams of high temperature grease from the repair kit into the triple roller joint.
- Lightly lubricate the roller body
Make sure the roller body does not tilt!
- Press the joint piece over the triple roller star using a plastic hammer.
- Press the remaining quantity of grease into the CV joint boot.
- Make sure that correct seating of the boot on CV joint.
- The boot must fit in groove and on joint contour.
- Position the joint piece in the center position. See the " min - max" position.
• Vent the CV joint boot - arrow -, for example, using a screwdriver, while positioning the joint piece in the center position.
- Install the clamp.
• For a better alignment of the bolts when installing the drive axle, the clamping sleeve connecting tube - 2 - must be between the joint connecting flanges - 1 -.
- Depending on the type, tension the small and large clamp using the (VAG 1275)
- Depending on the type, tension the small and large clamp using the (3340).
