Steering Gear
• Power steering gear is completely removed and installed with tie rods.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1332)
• Ring socket wrench (V.A.G 1332/7)
• Ball joint puller (T40010 A)
• Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051 A)
Removing
- Remove the front wheels. Refer to => Wheel
and Tire Guide 44 Removal and Installation.
- Unscrew the nut - 1 - from the joint pin - 2 - on the tie rod end as far as required to make it flush with the threading on the joint pin. Counterhold when loosening.
• Turn the nut a couple of turns on the pin to protect the threading.
- Use the (T40010 A) to force the tie rod end off of the wheel bearing housing. Next, remove the nut.
• Make sure that both lever arms on the puller are parallel to each other when you exert a great deal of force on them; adjust them so that they are parallel, if necessary.
- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to => Body
Exterior 66 Description and Operation.
- Remove the nuts - arrows - and lower the stabilizer bar.
- Remove the crossbrace. Refer to => [ Subframe Crossbrace ] Service and Repair.
The suspension components could be damaged.
• If the subframe mount, the steering gear or the subframe crossbrace are not installed correctly, do not rest the vehicle on its wheels.
• The vehicle must not be supported on the subframe or the subframe crossbrace (e.g. using a floor jack).
- Remove bolt - arrow -.
- Remove the steering intermediate shaft - 1 - from the steering gear - 2 -.
- Loosen the lock and push the retainer down and remove the connector - 1 - for the vehicle signals (CAN bus and terminal 15) from the power steering control module (J500).
- Releases the retainer - arrow -, push the release down and disconnect the connector - 2 - for the voltage (terminal 30) from the power steering control module.
- Remove the bolts - 1 and 2 -.
- Push the steering gear slightly to the side - arrow A - and remove it downward - arrow B -.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Pay attention to the following:
Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Electro-Mechanical Steering Gear With Tie Rods Assembly Overview ] Removal and Replacement.
- Install both bolts - 1 - loosely at first and then tighten them.
- Install stabilizer bar. Refer to => [ Stabilizer Bar ] Stabilizer Bar.
- Install the crossbrace. Refer to => [ Subframe Crossbrace ] Service and Repair.
If a new electromechanical steering gear has been installed, the (VAS 5051 A) under Guided Fault Finding , the "program" replace J 500 control module must be started.
- Perform an axle alignment. Refer to => [ Wheel Alignment ] Wheel Alignment.
