96 DTC 02811 in Access Start Authorization Control unit after replacing Electronic Steering Column Lock J764

96 12 28

2028419/1

January 27, 2012.

Affected Vehicles

Condition
After the replacing the control unit for the electronic steering column lock (J764), the DTC entry "2811 - control unit for steering column lock (electronic steering column lock) - incorrect cannot be cleared from the fault memory of the access start authorization control unit (J393), address code 05.

Technical Background

There is a diagnostic software error in the access start authorization control unit (J393) which does not allow this DTC from being erased from the fault memory. As a result the access start authorization control unit (J393) must have its software updated after the replacement of the electronic steering column lock (J764) in order to allow the DTC to be erased from the (J393) control unit. Replacing the electronic steering column lock (J764) a second time will not allow the DTC entry in the J393 to be erased.

Production Solution

Optimized software was placed in to production.

Service

Tip: Update the software of the access and start authorization (J393) control unit for BEFORE changing the electronic steering column lock (J764) control unit a SECOND time. Replacing the electronic steering column lock control unit a second time will not be accepted by warranty. This control unit should only be replaced a single time.

1. There are two possible variations of the access start authorization control unit (J393) and they can be recognized by the two different part numbers, 8K0 907 064 XX & 8K0 907 289 X (where "X" & "XX" denote any part number suffix combination). Each part must be handled in a different manner as suggested below. The reason for this is that not all part variations can support a software update.

2. For an access start authorization control unit (J393) with P/N 8K0 907 064, check the software version of the control unit and determine if the software can be updated (see table below). Proceed to Step 4.

SVM Update Instructions

Follow all instructions in TSB 2011732 00 Software Version Management (SVM), operating instructions.

Update the comfort access start authorization/convenience control module (J393) using the SVM action code as listed in the table above. If the software level is already at the level listed in the table, proceed to step 3.

3. For an access start authorization control units (J393) with P/N 8K0 907 289, only replacing the hardware can be performed. Please reference TSB 2024111 when replacing the control unit because one or two SVM Codes will be required to perform the SVM coding and parameterization of the new control unit.

4. For P/N 8K0 907 064, if a software update is not possible or if the software level is already at the level listed in the table above, then replace the access and start authorization (J393) control unit. Please reference TSB 2024111 when replacing the control unit because an SVM Code will be required to perform the SVM coding and parameterization of the new control unit.
