Affected Vehicles

Condition
Replaced brake light sensors are sometimes damaged during adjustment or removal, preventing proper analysis for quality purposes.

Technical Background

It is not necessary to remove the brake light sensor to perform an adjustment. Special tool T40168A is required to properly remove the brake light sensor.

Service

Adjustment procedure for the brake light sensor:


1. Switch ignition off.

2. Remove the driver's side instrument panel lower close out panel to gain access to the brake light sensor.





3. Push the brake light sensor plunger all the way in and hold. (Figure 1, arrow A).





4. Turn the magenta colored positioner counter-clockwise, approximately 60° to the stop. (Figure 2, arrow A). The brake light sensor is ready for adjustment.

5. Ensure the brake pedal is in its rest position and must not be moved.





6. Fully release the plunger. (Figure 3, arrow A).





7. Turn the magenta colored positioner clockwise, approximately 600 to the stop. (Figure 4, arrow B). The brake light sensor is now correctly adjusted.

Removal of the brake light sensor:

1. Switch ignition off.

2. Remove the driver's side instrument panel lower close out panel to gain access to the brake light switch.





3. Push the brake light sensor plunger all the way in and hold. (Figure 5, arrow A).





4. Turn the magenta colored positioner counter-clockwise, approximately 60° to the stop. (Figure 6, arrow A). The brake light sensor is ready for removal.





5. Release the plunger. (Figure 7, arrow A).

6. Install special tool T40168A between the brake light sensor plunger and the brake pedal.








(Figure 8, special tool T40168A).
(Figure 9, T40148A installed).

Tip: The cone on the tool must face in the direction of the driver seat. The opening on the tool must align with the projection on the brake light sensor.

7. Press tool T40168A against the brake light sensor. The three tabs on the brake light sensor unlock at the same time.

8. Remove the brake light sensor and remove the tool from the sensor.
