Shift Mechanism Function Unit

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Pry Lever - Rmv Outside Mirror (80 - 200)

Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)

Counterhold Tool (T10172) with (T10172/5)

Final Drive Support (T10337)

Removing

- Remove the front ashtray.





- Disconnect electrical connectors - 2 - and - 4 -.





The illustration does not show the insulation mat.

A second technician is required when detaching shift mechanism below vehicle.

- Remove insulation mat over the shift mechanism.

- Remove bolts - 1, 3, 5 and 6 -.

- Remove rear noise insulation - 2 -. Refer to => Body Exterior 66 Description and Operation.





- Remove nut - 1 - for the power steering hydraulic oil line.





CAUTION!
The suspension components could be damaged.

Do not rest the vehicle on its wheels if the subframe mount, the steering gear or the subframe crossbrace are not installed correctly.

- Remove bolts - arrows - and subframe crossbrace.

- Remove bolts - arrows - and driveshaft heat shield - 1 -, where applicable.





- Remove bolts that connect the driveshaft to the transmission by counterholding them with the Counterholder (T10172) and (T10172/5).





- Press the driveshaft together with rear final drive; the universal joint is able to slide axially.

- Lay the driveshaft on the front crossmember.

Vehicles with single pipe exhaust system:

CAUTION!
The decoupling element in the front exhaust pipe could be damaged.

Do not bend the decoupling elements in the front exhaust pipe more than 10°.

- Loosen the bolts - arrows -, slide the sleeve to the rear and tie up the front exhaust pipe to the body.





Vehicles with dual pipe exhaust system:

CAUTION!
Danger of damaging the flex joint in the front muffler.

Do not bend the decoupling element in the front muffler more than 10°.

- Loosen the sleeve - 1 - and - 2 -, slide it to the rear and tie the front muffler to the body.





All Vehicles

- Mount the Gearbox Support (T10337) on the Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) and attach it to the bottom of the transmission.





- Raise transmission slightly.

CAUTION!
There is the risk of an accident.

The Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) may only be used during assembly and must not sit unsupervised under the vehicle.

- Remove the tunnel crossmember bolts - arrows -.





- Carefully lower the transmission by dimension - a - using the Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A).





Dimension - a - = maximum 100 mm.

- Press selector lever cable ball socket - 2 - from selector shaft lever using Pry Lever - Rmv Outside Mirror (80 - 200).





- Press the securing clip - 1 - off and remove the selector lever cable from the transmission.

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

- Remove the nuts - arrows -, where applicable.





- Lower the vehicle floor panel cover just enough until it is possible to remove the center tunnel heat shield - 1 -.

- Remove the selector mechanism.

Installing

Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:

Tightening specifications. Refer to => [ Selector Mechanism Assembly Overview ] Selector Mechanism Assembly Overview.

Lightly grease ball socket of selector lever cable with Polycarbamide Grease (G 052 142 A2) before installing.

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

- Adjust selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting ] Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting.

- Install heat shield. Refer to => Body Exterior 66 Description and Operation.

- Install tunnel crossmember. Refer to => [ Tunnel Crossmember, Transmission Mount and Transmission Support Assembly Overview ] 0B5A Automatic Transmission.

- Check shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Selector Mechanism, Checking ] Component Tests and General Diagnostics.

- Install exhaust system free of tension. Refer to => Engine Mechanical 26 Description and Operation.

- Install driveshaft.

- Install subframe crossbrace. Refer to => Suspension,
Wheels, Steering 40 Removal and Installation.

- Install power steering hydraulic oil line. Refer to => Suspension, Wheels, Steering 48 Description and Operation.

- Install rear noise insulation. Refer to => Body Exterior 66 Description and Operation.

- Install front ashtray.
