Air Suspension Strut






Air Suspension Strut

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Tensioner Hooks (2) (VW 552)

Torque Wrench 50-200 Nm (V.A.G 1332)

Engine-/Gearbox Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)

Bit (T10099) or Bit (T10099/1)

Wheel Hub Support (T10149)

Ball Joint Puller (T10187)

Removing

Suspension strut (air suspension) is removed together with mounting bracket and upper control arm.

During assembly work, ensure no pressure points are created on suspension strut (air suspension) boot.

- Place vehicle on hoist. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.

- Perform system vent using vehicle diagnostic tester. Refer to => [ System, Venting or Filling ] System, Venting or Filling.

- Remove the wiper arms.






- Remove the cowl panel trim.

- Remove the wheel.

- Wheel housing liner, removing.






- Clean air connection area.






- Remove connector piece - 1 - at residual pressure retaining valve - 2 -.

Residual pressure retaining valve must only be replaced if it was damaged during removal and installation or servicing of suspension strut (air suspension) or if air is not released from it anymore (it sticks).

- Seal both connections. Make sure that no dust particles enter connections.

- Remove nut - 2 - and disconnect connector - 3 -.






- Remove connector - 2 - from left front dampening adjustment valve (N336) and unclip electrical line.






- Disconnect driveshaft from rear final drive. Use 1 (T10099) or (T10099/1) to loosen bolts - 3 -.






- Remove the bolt - 2 -.

- Hook the (VW 552) in the upper opening of the wheel housing - arrow A - and on the upper control arm - arrow B -.






- Lightly tension the upper control arm using (VW 552).

Applies the right suspension strut on vehicles with two engine control modules






- Remove engine control module 2 (J624) - 2 -.

Continuation for All






- Remove bolts - 1 - to - 3 -.

- Turn the wheel hub until one of the holes for the wheel bolts is on top.






- Install (T10149) with wheel bolt on wheel hub.

- Support wheel bearing housing over (T10149) with (V.A.G 1383 A).

Do not lift or lower vehicle with engine/transmission jack below vehicle.

Do not leave (V.A.G 1383 A) below vehicle any longer than necessary.

- Remove (VW 552).






- Remove nut from the upper control arm and press arm off.






- Remove nut from the tie rod end and press tie rod end off of wheel bearing housing.






- Remove connector nut - 1 -, suspension strut to lower control arm.






- Do not lower wheel bearing housing over (T10149) with (V.A.G 1383 A) more than is necessary.






- Remove bolt - 1 - from lower control arm and remove suspension strut.






Installing

Installation is the reverse of removal, with special attention to the following:

If a new suspension strut (air suspension) is installed, this must first be filled. Refer to => [ Air Suspension Strut, Filling ] Front Suspension.

Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Air Suspension Strut, Upper Control Arm and Level Control System Sensor Overview ] Front Axle Overview

Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent. Only tighten suspension screws when vehicle is in curb weight or control position.

Wheel bearing, lifting to control position on vehicles with air suspension. Refer to => [ Wheel Bearing in Control Position, Lifting Vehicles with Air Suspension ] Wheel Bearing In Control Position, Lifting Vehicles With Air Suspension.

- Install engine control module 2 , if it was removed earlier.

- Install the cowl panel trim.

- Wheel housing liner, installing.

- Install the wheel and tighten the wheel bolts.

- Place vehicle on wheels. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.

- Adapt the control position. Refer to => [ Control Position, Programming ] Programming and Relearning.
