Instrument Panel
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Pry Lever (80-200)
Removing
• Position cable ties that were removed or cut away during removal in same place when installing.
- Position steering wheel so that it is as far rearward and down as possible, using full adjustment range of steering column adjuster.
- Adjust front seat all the way back and place backrest in 45° position.
- Shift selector lever into "S" position.
- Unlock the glove compartment cover.
• Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components.
• Follow the allocation of the airbag unit to the instrument panel. Refer to Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA).
- Switch the ignition on.
- Disconnect the battery ground cable with the ignition switched on.
- Remove the airbag unit.
- Remove steering wheel.
- Remove center console. Refer to => [ Center Console ] Center Console.
- Remove left side instrument panel cover. Refer to => [ Panel Side Cover ] Panel Side Cover.
- If present, remove screw - 1 - at air duct - 2 - and remove air duct.
- Remove the headlamp switch.
- Remove lower instrument panel trim on driver side. Refer to => [ Lower Driver Side Instrument Panel Cover ] Lower Driver Side Instrument Panel Cover.
- Remove upper driver side instrument panel cover. Refer to => [ Upper Instrument Cover, Driver Side Knee Bar ] Upper Instrument Cover, Driver Side Knee Bar.
- Pull parking brake release cable - 4 - in - direction of arrow - out of bracket - 3 -.
- Remove the nipple - 2 - from the parking brake release handle - 1 - and then remove the release handle.
- Free up the release cable.
- Remove steering column switch module.
- Remove the center instrument panel vent. Refer to => [ Center Instrument Panel Vent ] Center Instrument Panel Vent.
- Remove CD Changer (R41).
- Remove Climatronic Control Module (J255).
- Remove the instrument cluster.
- Remove the access/start authorization switch (E415).
- If present, disconnect electrical connector - arrow - on Indirect Ventilation Flap Motor (V213).
- Remove right side instrument panel cover. Refer to => [ Panel Side Cover ] Panel Side Cover.
- Remove the glove compartment. Refer to => [ Glove Compartment ] Glove Compartment.
- Remove passenger side instrument panel cover. Refer to => [ Passenger Side Instrument Panel Cover ] Passenger Side Instrument Panel Cover.
Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components.
- Remove the front passenger airbag unit. Refer to => [ Front Passenger Airbag Unit ] Front Passenger Airbag Unit.
- Remove the front passenger airbag unit bracket. Refer to => [ Front Passenger Airbag Unit Bracket ] Front Passenger Airbag Unit Bracket.
- Remove indirect ventilation trim. Refer to => [ Indirect Ventilation Trim ] Indirect Ventilation Trim.
- Remove speaker from instrument panel.
- Remove left and right instrument panel screws - arrows -.
- Remove the instrument panel vent electrical connectors on the right and left sides.
- Remove instrument panel screws - 1 - and - 2 -.
- Press electrical wiring harness - 3 - off installation frame with (80-200).
• For easier removal of wiring clips, use silicon-free lubricating spray if necessary.
- Remove left and right screw - 4 - on installation frame.
- Using a screwdriver, raise tab on installation frame at - arrow A - and pull instrument panel back from central tube - arrow B -.
• 2 technicians are needed to remove the instrument panel.
- Remove instrument panel from the vehicle interior.
- Lay instrument panel on a soft surface.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
• When installing, position cable ties in same place.
- Position instrument panel and guide electrical connectors for Sunlight Photo Sensor (G107) and speaker through opening in instrument panel.
- Slide clamps - 1 - on instrument panel - 3 - into the openings on lower windshield frame - 2 - by lightly pressing them down.
- Align instrument panel and tighten screws.
Ignition must be on when connecting battery. If pyrotechnic components (for example, airbag, belt tensioner) are not repaired correctly, they may deploy unintentionally after connecting battery. Maintain personal safety when connecting the battery by staying out of airbag deployment areas, keeping a distance from belt tensioners/seat belts and ensuring no other people are in the vehicle interior at the moment when the battery is connected.
- Switch on ignition.
- Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on.
- If the Airbag indicator lamp (K75) indicates a fault after installation, the DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again using the Vehicle diagnostic tester.
