Axle Shaft Assembly: Description and Operation






Drive Axle Overview, with Bolted Inner Joint






1 Drive Axle

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Drive Axle, Bolted Inner Joint ] Drive Axle, Bolted Inner Joint

For the correct allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog

2 Outer CV Joint

Can only be replaced with the drive shaft

If CV boot on outer joint must be replaced, inner joint must first be removed from drive axle. Refer to => [ Drive Axle, with Bolted Inner Joint ] Drive Axle, With Bolted Inner Joint.

Before assembling, coat splines with assembly paste.

For the correct allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog

3 Self-Locking 12-Point Nut

500 Nm

Always replace if removed

Before assembling, coat contact surface with assembly paste

4 Clamp

Replace

For the correct allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog

5 Protective Boot

Check for tears and scuffing

For the correct allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog

6 Clamp

Replace

For the correct allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog

7 Cover

8 Locking Ring

Remove and install using circlip pliers (VW 161 A)

9 Inner CV joint

Replace only as complete unit

10 Cover

For the correct allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog

11 Clamp

Replace

For the correct allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog

12 Locking Plate

For the correct allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog

13 Bolt

50 Nm + 90° turn

Always replace if removed
