Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Adapter Plate (T10103/1) and Bolts (T10103/2)
• Wheel Hub Support (T10149)
• Ball Joint Puller (T10187)
• Fitting Tool (T10206)
• Socket 32 mm (T10209)
• Torque Wrench 50-200 Nm (V.A.G 1332)
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1601)
• Bit (T10099) or Bit (T10099/1)
• Engine-/Gearbox Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)
Removing
- Remove 12-point nut. Refer to => [ Drive Axle Outer Joint Twelve Point Nut, Loosening and Tightening ] Front Suspension.
• Only loosen and tighten 12-point nut if vehicle stands on wheels (risk of accident!).
• Do not move vehicle when 12-point nut is loosened. Otherwise, wheel bearing may be damaged.
• If the vehicle must be moved with the drive axle removed, install the outer joint and tighten it to 150 Nm.
- Disconnect drive axle from rear final drive. Use (T10099) or (T10099/1) to loosen bolts - 3 -.
- Remove the bolt - 2 -.
- Remove both brackets with ABS speed sensor and brake wear indicator electrical wiring at wheel bearing housing.
- Remove brake caliper and secure to body so that the weight of the brake caliper does not stress or damage brake hose or brake line.
- Remove nut from tie rod end and press tie rod end off of wheel bearing housing.
- Remove nut from upper control arm and press arm off.
- Press out drive axle.
• Remove (T10103/1) with (T10103/2).
- Make sure there is adequate clearance when pressing out the joints.
- Turn the wheel hub until one of the holes for the wheel bolts is on top.
- Install the (T10149) with wheel bolt on wheel hub.
- Support wheel bearing housing over (T10149) with (V.A.G 1383 A).
• Do not lift or lower vehicle with engine/transmission jack below vehicle.
• Do not leave (V.A.G 1383 A) below vehicle any longer than necessary.
- Disconnect connection - 1 -, suspension strut to lower control arm.
- Lower the wheel bearing housing - 1 - and tip outward until drive axle - 2 - can be removed.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Observe the following when doing so:
• Coat outer CV joint splines with assembly paste before assembly.
- Install the outer joint as far as possible into the wheel hub splines.
- Pull in driveshaft until stop using (T10206).
• Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent. Only tighten suspension bolts when vehicle is in curb weight or control position.
• Wheel bearing, lifting to curb weight position on vehicles with coil springs. Refer to => [ Wheel Bearing in Curb Weight, Lifting Vehicles with Coil Spring ] Wheel Bearing In Curb Weight, Lifting Vehicles With Coil Spring.
• For vehicles with air spring suspension, lift wheel suspension in control position. Refer to => [ Wheel Bearing in Control Position, Lifting Vehicles with Air Suspension ] Wheel Bearing In Control Position, Lifting Vehicles With Air Suspension.
- Tighten 12-point nut. Refer to => [ Drive Axle Outer Joint Twelve Point Nut, Loosening and Tightening ] Front Suspension.
- On vehicles with air suspension, position vehicle on wheels. Refer to => [ Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels ] Positioning Vehicle on Hoist and Wheels.
